Schvartze
Schvartze (from ; cf. German: ; OED) is a racial slur for black people in the Yiddish language. Etymology ''Schvartze'' is derived from the Yiddish word ''schvarts'', which means "black". The term was rare prior to the 20th century. An article for the Washington Jewish Week refers to it as "the S-word". About The term ''schvartze'' has been described as "the Jewish N-word" or "the Yiddish N-word". Among white South African Jews, the term has a history of being used to describe Black South Africans, as well as Indian South Africans and Coloured South Africans. Black Jewish writer Michael W. Twitty noted in 2017 a handful of public instances in which the term was used. He notes that he had never heard the term used in earlier stages of his life and spoke against a return of the word's use, comparing it to the term " kushi". Racism In Jewish Communities
Racism in Jewish communities is a source of concern for people of color, particularly for Jews of color. Black Jews, Indigenous Jews, and other Jews of color report that they experience racism from white Jews in many countries, including Canada, France, Kenya, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews also report experiences with racism by Ashkenazi Jews. The centering of Ashkenazi Jews is sometimes known as Ashkenormativity. Shais Rishon
Shais Rishon, also known by the pen name MaNishtana, is an African-American Orthodox rabbi, activist, and writer. He has written for '' Tablet'', '' Kveller'', ''The Forward'', ''Jewcy'', and '' Hevria'', as well as writing a semi-autobiographical novel under his pen name. In 2014, he was included in ''The Jewish Week'''s "36 Under 36", an annual list of influential Jews under age 36. Biography Rishon was born February 14, 1982 in Brooklyn, New York to an Ashkenazi Jewish family associated with the Chabad-Lubavitch movement. According to him, his mother's ancestors have been practicing Jews since the 1780s. His father, Asher Rishon, converted to Judaism after meeting Shais' mother. Growing up, Shais felt alienated from the Jewish community due to his race and the treatment he received from other Jews. Jews of color (or Jews of colour) is a neologism, primarily used in North America, that describes Jews from non-white racial and ethnic backgrounds, whether mixed-race, adopted, Jews by conversion, or part of national or geographic populations (or a combination of these) that are non-white. Mark Keith Robinson (born August 18, 1968) is an American former politician who served as the 35th lieutenant governor of North Carolina from 2021 to 2025. A member of the Republican Party, he was the party's nominee in the 2024 North Carolina gubernatorial election. He is North Carolina's first Black lieutenant governor and was the first Black major party nominee for governor. Born in Greensboro, Robinson worked in furniture manufacturing for several years before entering politics.
