Scholengemeenschap Augustinianum
Scholengemeenschap Augustinianum is a secondary school in the municipality of Eindhoven. It offers hoger algemeen voortgezet onderwijs, havo and voorbereidend wetenschappelijk onderwijs, vwo. History The school first opened on October 3, 1898 by Augustinians in Eindhoven. Back then, the name was Gymnasium Augustinianum, which was changed to Roman Catholic Gymnasium in 1917. In 1928 the school moved to another convent, which broke all contacts with convent Mariënhage. The activities of the school were moved to yet another building during the Second World War while the convent was in hands of the Germans. After the war it was used as a military hospital as well as a building for victims returning from Germany. Meanwhile, the school was allowed to use a part of the building again. The school magazine was first released in 1935, when two other school magazines merged into this new one. ''Hoger algemeen voortgezet onderwijs'' (havo, meaning "higher general continued education" in Dutch) is a stream in the secondary educational system of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Suriname. It has five grades and is generally attended at ages of 12 to 17. It provides access to the hogeschool-level (polytechnic) of tertiary education. The first three years are the ''Basisvorming'' (literally "basis formation"). All pupils follow the same subjects: languages, mathematics, history, arts and sciences. In the third year, pupils must choose one of four profiles. A profile is a set of different subjects that will make up for the largest part of the pupil's timetable in the fourth and fifth year. ''Voorbereidend wetenschappelijk onderwijs'' (VWO, meaning "preparatory scientific education" in Dutch) is the highest variant in the secondary educational system of the Netherlands, attended by approximately a fifth of all Dutch high school students. After leaving primary or elementary school students are enrolled in different types of secondary schools, according to their academic ability. The course is a six-year course and successful completion allows the candidate admission to Dutch universities. The VWO is therefore a matriculation exam. Dutch Pupil Strike
The Dutch pupil strike in 2007 was a series of student strikes in which students from the Netherlands, upset by demands from the government on its schools, ignored lessons and often went with masses to city halls in their municipalities. Motivation The pupil strike was motivated by the demands of the state on schools to fill up the demanded 1040 clock hours they have to legally teach each year. The state wanted schools to fill these up with extra hours in which pupils were to be in the class with a teacher without getting actual lessons. Pupils state this does not increase the quality of education. First strike As an effect of these policies organizations like DWARS and LAKS called for a strike on Friday 23 November. Dries Van Agt
Andreas Antonius Maria "Dries" van Agt (; born 2 February 1931) is a Dutch politician and diplomat of the defunct Catholic People's Party (KVP) and later the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) party and jurist who served as Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 19 December 1977 until 4 November 1982.
