Scholastique Pitton
Jean Scholastique Pitton (18 December 1621 – 21 February 1689) was a French writer and historian. Biography Jean Scholastique Pitton was born in Aix-en-Provence on 18 December 1621. At a young age he decided to become a doctor, and he pursued this occupation in Saint-Chamas, Bouches-du-Rhône. However his passion for history made him neglect his patients. Pitton wanted to become a historian, following in this the model of the Aix historian Honoré Bouche whose reputation he envied. Although he admired Bouche, he never ceased "to decry him or to bite him." After the death of his second wife, Pitton requested a dispensation from Rome to take holy orders. He obtained it the day he married his third wife. He was the author of a '' History of the city of Aix '' (1666), considered of some usefulness by his successors, although badly ordered and badly written. His later writings received better reviews. Joseph Villevieille
Joseph Villevieille (1829–1916) was a French painter. Early life Joseph Villevieille was born on 6 August 1829 in Aix-en-Provence. He graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Career Villevieille taught painting in Aix-en-Provence. He became friends with Paul Cézanne, whose mother he painted shortly before she died. When the townhall of Aix-en-Provence was burgled on 22 August 1872, Villevieille was commissioned to do many paintings for its walls. Some of those paintings were portraits of prominent local painters like Jean-Baptiste van Loo and François Marius Granet, and local historian Scholastique Pitton. In 1900, he did a painting of Sextius Calvinus Gaius Sextius Calvinus was a consul of the Roman Republic in 124 BC. During his consulship, he joined M. Fulvius Flaccus in waging war against the Ligures, Saluvii, and Vocontii in the Mediterranean region of present-day France. Aix-en-Provence (, , ; oc, label=Provençal, Ais de Provença in classical norm, or in Mistralian norm, ; la, Aquae Sextiae), or simply Aix ( medieval Occitan: ''Aics''), is a city and commune in southern France, about north of Marseille. Saint-Chamas
Saint-Chamas (in Provençal Occitan: ''Sanch Amàs'' in classical orthography, ''Sant Chamas'' according to Mistralian orthography) is a commune in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southern France. Geography Saint-Chamas is situated on the shore of the Étang de Berre, 15 km south of Salon-de-Provence and 50 km north-west of Marseille, in a part of the region that has not been industrialised. The highest point of the town is ''Le Verdon'' at an altitude of 121 metres. Population Inhabitants are called ''Saint-Chamasséens''. History Archaeological investigation of rock shelters has proved that the site of Saint-Chamas was already occupied in the Paleolithic era. During the Iron Age, the site was used by the Ligures, who constructed an oppidum (a fortified village), and then by the Celts. Honoré Bouche
Honoré Bouche (27 May 1599 – 16 March 1671) was a French priest and historian of Provence. Biography Honoré Bouche was born in Aix-en-Provence on 27 May 1599. He was the son of Balthazard Bouche and Louise Meyronnet. His older brother, born 21 December 1591 and named Balthazard after their father, was twice consul of Aix-en-Provence in 1635 and 1647. Honoré Bouche is known for having written a history of Provence entitled ''Chorographie ou description de la Provence et Histoire chronologique du même pays'' in two folio volumes to which he added additions and corrections. He gave his manuscript free of charge to the province, which had it printed at its expense. He is also known to have written as "Doctor of Holy Theology and Provost of Saint James", in 1646, ''The Holy Virgin of Laurete, or History of the various transports of the House of the Glorious Virgin Mary who was in Nazareth for the Anne of Austria''.
