Elyakim Schlesinger (), born 1921, is a rabbi and rosh yeshiva in London. He is an international authority and serves as the President, Chairman, and Head of the Rabbinical Board of the Committee for the Preservation of Jewish Cemeteries in Europe. He is a grandson of ''Moreinu'' Yaakov Rosenheim, one of the founders of World Agudath Israel. Schlesinger was born in Vienna in September 1921 and emigrated to Israel with his family in the late 1930s. He is a son-in-law of Rabbi Moshe Blau. Westerbork Transit Camp
Camp Westerbork (, , Drents: ''Börker Kamp; Kamp Westerbörk''), also known as Westerbork transit camp, was a Nazi transit camp in the province of Drenthe in the Northeastern Netherlands, during World War II. It was located in the municipality of Westerbork, current-day Midden-Drenthe. Camp Westerbork was used as a staging location for sending Jews, Sinti and Roma to concentration camps elsewhere. Purpose of Camp Westerbork The camp location was established by the Government of the Netherlands in the summer of 1939 to serve as a refugee camp for Germans and Austrians (German and Austrian Jews in particular), who had fled to the Netherlands to escape Nazi persecution. However, after the German invasion of the Netherlands in May 1940, that original purpose no longer existed. By 1942, Camp Westerbork was repurposed as a staging ground for the deportation of Jews. Kurt Schlesinger
Kurt Schlesinger (17 December 1902 – 3 August 1963) was a German Jewish administrative director of Westerbork transit camp during World War II. Early life Kurt Schlesinger lived in his hometown Schmalkalden until 1939. He married Thea Francis Klein from Nuremberg in 1937. After he was threatened during the Crystal Night, the pair fled to Amsterdam on 12 January 1939, where they were quarantined until the end of the year. Collaborator On 6 March 1940, the couple were interned in the Westerbork transit camp, where they were initially obliged to work as miners. In February 1942, Schlesinger was promoted to Chief Service Officer of the Jewish Security Service. His deputy was Heinz Todtmann, the head of service area I (command office). Karl Schlesinger
Karl Schlesinger (January 19, 1889 – March 12, 1938) was an Austrian-Hungarian economist and banker. He was born in Budapest. He studied law and economics at the University of Vienna, obtaining a doctorate under Eugene von Böhm-Bawerk in 1914. Schlesinger's work, which made significant use of mathematics, would go on to be influential, but it was not received well by his fellow contemporary Austrian economists. He moved from Budapest to Vienna 1919, escaping Bela Kun's communist revolution. He established a bank in Vienna. He participated in Ludwig von Mises's Austrian economics seminar. He hired Karl Menger as his tutor in mathematics in 1931 and hired Abraham Wald in 1932 as his tutor. John Richard Schlesinger ( ; 16 February 1926 – 25 July 2003) was an English film and stage director, and actor. He emerged in the early 1960s as a leading light of the British New Wave, before embarking on a successful career in Hollywood, often directing films dealing frankly in provocative subject matter, combined with his status as one of the rare openly gay directors working in mainstream films. Josef Schlesinger, (May 11, 1928 – February 11, 2019) was a Canadian foreign correspondent, television journalist, and author. Early life and career Schlesinger was born to a devout Jewish family in Vienna, Austria, on May 11, 1928. He was raised in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, where his parents, Emmanuel and Lilli (Fischl) Schlesinger, owned a cleaning supplies shop. After Czechoslovakia was occupied by Germany in 1938, he and his younger brother, Ernest, were sent to England by his parents as part of the kindertransport, organized by Nicholas Winton, that rescued 669 Jewish children. His parents were later killed in the Holocaust. Schlesinger appears in and narrates the 2011 documentary ''Nicky's Family'' about Winton and the kindertransport. Hermann Irving Schlesinger
Hermann Irving Schlesinger (October 11, 1882 – October 3, 1960) was an American inorganic chemist, working in boron chemistry. He and Herbert C. Brown discovered sodium borohydride in 1940 and both were involved in the further development of borohydride chemistry. Schlesinger studied chemistry at the University of Chicago from 1900 till 1905, where he received his Ph.D. for work with Julius Stieglitz. In the following two years, he worked with Walther Nernst at the University of Berlin; with Johannes Thiele at the University of Strasbourg; and with John Jacob Abel at Johns Hopkins University. From 1907 to 1960, he taught in the department of chemistry at the University of Chicago, rising through the ranks from instructor to full professor in 1922. He administered the department from 1922-1946, and retired in 1949.
