Harzer Wandernadel
The Harzer Wandernadel is a system of hiking awards in the Harz mountains in central Germany. The hiker (or mountain biker) can earn awards at different levels of challenge by walking to the various checkpoints in the network and stamping his or her passbook to record the visit. With 222 checkpoints in three federal states and across five districts in the Harz and with membership in five figures, the system has gained a following Germany-wide. Purpose The idea of the ''Wandernadel'' (literally "hiking needle/pin" --> "hiking badge") is to give those holidaying in the Harz a worthwhile goal to achieve and encourage them to stay for longer or return. It also aims to encourage those who live in the local area to go hiking and improve their fitness. Karl Blossfeldt
Karl Blossfeldt (June 13, 1865December 9, 1932) was a German photographer and sculptor. He is best known for his close-up photographs of plants and living things, published in 1929 as ''Urformen der Kunst''. He was inspired, as was his father, by nature and the ways in which plants grow. He believed that "the plant must be valued as a totally artistic and architectural structure." Among his contacts at the Berlin Arts and Crafts School was Heinz Warneke. From 1923, he was professor at the ''Vereinigte Staatsschulen für Freie und Angewandte Kunst'' (United State Schools for Fine and Applied Art) in Berlin, Germany. He died aged 67. Anhalt Castle (german: Burg Anhalt) is a ruined medieval fortification near the town of Harzgerode in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Location The castle is located in the eastern, lower part of the Harz mountain range (''Unterharz''). Ballenstedt is a town in the Harz district, in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. Geography It is situated at the northern rim of the Harz mountain range, about 10 km (6 mi) southeast of Quedlinburg. The E11 European long distance path or E11 path is one of the European long-distance paths, running 4700 km (about 2900 miles) west-east from The Hague in the Netherlands through Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia to Tallinn, Estonia. The B 242 is a federal highway (german: Bundesstraße) in Germany. It runs from Seesen to Mansfeld. Route The B 242, also known as the Harz High Road (''Harzhochstraße''), runs right across the Harz mountains in central Germany.
