Scherger Immigration Detention Centre
RAAF Base Scherger (ICAO_airport_code, ICAO: YBSG) is a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) military airfield, military air base located approximately east of Weipa, Queensland, Weipa on the western side of Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, Australia. One of three RAAF bare bases, bare bases in a chain of bases across Australia's top end, the base is occupied by a caretaker staff and can be activated at relatively short notice. The base was constructed by troops drawn mainly from the 17th Construction Squadron (Australia), 17th Construction Squadron, in what is believed to have been the biggest project undertaken by the Royal Australian Engineers at the time. Frederick Scherger
Air Chief Marshal (Australia), Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Rudolph William Scherger, (18 May 190416 January 1984) was a senior commander in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). He served as Chief of Air Force (Australia), Chief of the Air Staff, the RAAF's highest-ranking position, from 1957 until 1961, and as Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee, forerunner of the role of Australia's Chief of the Defence Force (Australia), Chief of the Defence Force, from 1961 until 1966.
