''Scherffelia'' is a genus of green algae in the family Chlorodendraceae. The genus was circumscription (taxonomy), circumscribed by Adolf Pascher, Adolf A. Pascher in Lotos vol.59 on page 341 in 1911. The genus name of ''Scherffelia'' is in honour of Aladár Scherffel (1865–1938), who was a Hungarian botanist (Algology) and mycologist. Green Algae
The green algae (: green alga) are a group of chlorophyll-containing autotrophic eukaryotes consisting of the phylum Prasinodermophyta and its unnamed sister group that contains the Chlorophyta and Charophyta/ Streptophyta. The land plants ( Embryophytes) have emerged deep within the charophytes as a sister of the Zygnematophyceae. Since the realization that the Embryophytes emerged within the green algae, some authors are starting to include them. The completed clade that includes both green algae and embryophytes is monophyletic and is referred to as the clade Viridiplantae and as the kingdom Plantae. The green algae include unicellular and colonial flagellates, most with two flagella per cell, as well as various colonial, coccoid (spherical), and filamentous forms, and macroscopic, multicellular seaweeds. Circumscription (taxonomy)
In biological taxonomy, circumscription is the content of a taxon, that is, the delimitation of which subordinate taxa are parts of that taxon. For example, if we determine that species X, Y, and Z belong in genus A, and species T, U, V, and W belong in genus B, those are our circumscriptions of those two genera. Another systematist might determine that T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z all belong in genus A. Agreement on circumscriptions is not governed by the Codes of Zoological or Botanical Nomenclature, and must be reached by scientific consensus. A goal of biological taxonomy is to achieve a stable circumscription for every taxon. This goal conflicts, at times, with the goal of achieving a natural classification that reflects the evolutionary history of divergence of groups of organisms. Adolf Pascher
Adolf Alois Pascher (31 May 1881 – 7 May 1945) was a Bohemian botanist and phycologist, notable for his descriptions of several new genera of algae, protists, and vascular plants. Biography Born in Stožec, Pascher was the son of a teacher, attended the Gymnasium in Krummau and studied natural science at the German University in Prague, from which he received a doctorate in 1905, and graduated in 1909. In 1908, in partnership with Viktor Langhans, he co-founded a Hydrobiological Laboratory in Hirschberg. In 1912 he became an associate professor of Herbalism and Cryptogamic Botany, later being promoted to Full Professor in 1927. In 1933, he became Director of the Botanical Institutes and Botanical Gardens at the German University in Prague. The World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) is a taxonomic database that aims to provide an authoritative and comprehensive catalogue and list of names of marine organisms. Content The content of the registry is edited and maintained by scientific specialists on each group of organism. These taxonomists control the quality of the information, which is gathered from the primary scientific literature as well as from some external regional and taxon-specific databases. WoRMS maintains valid names of all marine organisms, but also provides information on synonyms and invalid names.
