Scenes In The City
''Scenes in the City'' is the debut album by American saxophonist Branford Marsalis, released in 1984. It was his first album as leader, having previously recorded the album ''Fathers and Sons'' in 1982 with his father and brothers. Production ''Scenes in the City'' was produced by Thomas Mowrey. Bassist Ron Carter contributed to three tracks on the album. The title track was composed twenty years earlier by Charles Mingus. Marsalis composed three tracks on the album, while pianists Mulgrew Miller and Kenny Kirkland composed one track each. The album features much of the same lineup as his brother Wynton Marsalis's albums of that time period, including Black Codes (From the Underground), recorded the next year. Critical reception ''Scenes in the City'' was given four out of four stars and included in the Penguin Jazz Guide's list of 1000 Best Jazz albums, the only Branford Marsalis album of the list. Branford Marsalis
Branford Marsalis (born August 26, 1960) is an American saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. While primarily known for his work in jazz as the leader of the Branford Marsalis Quartet, he also performs frequently as a soloist with classical ensembles and has led the group Buckshot LeFonque. From 1992 to 1995 he led The Tonight Show Band. Early life Marsalis was born on August 26, 1960, in New Orleans. Robin Eubanks
Robin Eubanks (born October 25, 1955) is an American jazz and jazz fusion slide trombonist, the brother of guitarist Kevin Eubanks and trumpeter Duane Eubanks. Younger brother Shane Eubanks, twin to Duane Eubanks, is a DJ. His uncles are jazz pianist Ray Bryant and bassist Tommy Bryant. His mother, Vera Eubanks, was famed pianist Kenny Barron's first piano teacher. Biography Robin Eubanks was born on October 25, 1955, in Philadelphia. After graduating cum laude from the University of the Arts, he moved to New York City where he first appeared on the jazz scene in the early 1980s. Marvin “Smitty” Smith
Marvin "Smitty" Smith (born June 24, 1961) is an American jazz drummer and composer. Marvin Smith was born in Waukegan, Illinois, where his father, Marvin Sr., was a drummer. "Smitty" was exposed to music at a young age, receiving formal musical training at the age of three. After graduating from Waukegan East High School, Smith attended Berklee, graduating in 1981. Smith has recorded 200 albums with various artists, as well as two solo albums. He has toured with, among others, Sting, Dave Holland, Sonny Rollins, Willie Nelson and Steve Coleman. He is a former member of The New York Jazz Quartet, and was the drummer for the ''Tonight Show with Jay Leno'' band, led by Kevin Eubanks, from January 30, 1995 until the show's end on May 29, 2009. Jeff "Tain" Watts
Jeff "Tain" Watts (born January 20, 1960) is an American jazz drummer who has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Betty Carter, Michael Brecker, Alice Coltrane, Ravi Coltrane, and others. Biography Watts got the nickname "Tain" from Kenny Kirkland when they were on tour in Florida and drove past a Chieftain gas station. Ray Drummond
Ray Drummond (born November 23, 1946, in Brookline, Massachusetts) is an American jazz bassist and teacher. He also has an Master of Business Administration, MBA from Stanford University, hence his linkage to the Stanford Jazz Workshop. He can be heard on hundreds of albums and co-leads ''The Drummonds'' with Renee Rosnes and (not related) Billy Drummond. Drummond has been a resident of Teaneck, New Jersey, since 1980 with his wife, Susan, and his daughter, Maya. Phillip Charles Bowler (born March 2, 1948, New York City) is an American jazz double-bassist and radio Host (radio), host. Career Bowler attended the University of Hartford, where he received a bachelor's degree in music in 1972. He played with Roland Kirk from 1976–78, then with Hugh Masekela (1980), Joe Lee Wilson (1981), Wynton Marsalis (1982–83), Max Roach (1983), Big Nick Nicholas (1983-85), Slide Hampton, Jon Faddis (1984–89), and Ralph Peterson, Jr. (1987-1996). He played in a quintet with Donald Harrison and Terence Blanchard in 1984–85, touring in Europe with Benny Golson. He recorded with Carla White in 1988 and Sal Salvador in 1989, and led a quartet called Pocket Jungle in 1991.
