Scarlet Saint
''Scarlet Saint'', also known as ''The Scarlet Sinner'', is a 1925 American silent drama film directed by George Archainbaud and starring Mary Astor, Lloyd Hughes, and Frank Morgan. The film's sets were designed by the art director Milton Menasco. Plot As described in a film magazine review, a young woman who as a girl was betrothed to an Austrian baron decides on the eve of the wedding that she cannot marry the titled man because she is in love with a young American. The baron tricks the other man into a duel and forces the woman into marriage to save the younger man from a long term in jail. After a long period of struggle to retain his wife, the baron at length releases her and wishes her happiness with the American. George Archainbaud
George Archainbaud (May 7, 1890 – February 20, 1959) was a French- American film and television director. Biography In the beginning of his career he worked on stage as an actor and manager. He came to the United States in January 1914, and started his film career as an assistant director to Emile Chautard at the World Film Company in Fort Lee, New Jersey. In 1917 he made his own directorial debut ''As Man Made Her''. During the next three and a half decades he directed over one hundred films. After the beginning of the 1950s he moved to television. While working at RKO Radio Pictures in the beginning of the 1930s, he showed some artistic and skillful eye with many of his films. The finest examples include '' Thirteen Women'' (1932), a story of ethnic discrimination and revenge, with Myrna Loy as a half-caste Hindu; '' The Lost Squadron'' (1932), a memorable thriller about Hollywood stunt flyers, who risk their lives under the direction of monstrous Erich von Stroheim; ' ... Milton Menasco
Milton Menasco (January 22, 1890 – June 7, 1974) was an American painter and art director of silent movies. Born in 1890 in Los Angeles, California, Menasco began his art career in the early days of Hollywood, when his "blood and thunder" posters enticed movie fans into theaters to watch the first silent pictures. He was commissioned to do mural paintings at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco for the World's Fair in 1915. His vivid use of colors and graphics won him recognition in Hollywood, where he worked on 33 films—29 times as art director and twice as set director. In 1925 he was the architecture and set director for the original film based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's ''The Lost World''. A lost film is a feature or short film that no longer exists in any studio archive, private collection, public archive or the U.S. Library of Congress. Conditions During most of the 20th century, U.S. copyright law required at least one copy of every American film to be deposited at the Library of Congress at the time of copyright registration, but the Librarian of Congress was not required to retain those copies: "Under the provisions of the act of March 4, 1909, authority is granted for the return to the claimant of copyright of such copyright deposits as are not required by the Library."
