Scaralina Marmorata
''Scaralina marmorata'' is a species of planthopper in the family Fulgoridae, found throughout the southeastern United States. It is one of four species (the others being '' Scaralina aethrinsula'', '' Scaralina cristata'', and '' Scaralina metcalfi'') that were, for several decades, erroneously grouped together under a single name, ''Alphina glauca''; this name is now treated as a synonym of ''S. marmorata''. Taxonomy Historically, this species has been incorrectly associated with three other genera; the genus '' Calyptoproctus'' (which molecular DNA evidence suggests is not in the tribe Poiocerini),Urban, J.M. & Cryan, J.R. (2009) Entomologically famous, evolutionarily unexplored: The first phylogeny of the lanternfly family Fulgoridae (Insecta: Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea). Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 50(3): 471–484. the genus '' Crepusia'', a slightly more closely related genus from South America, and '' Alphina'', a closely related genus also from South America. Planthopper
A planthopper is any insect in the infraorder Fulgoromorpha, in the suborder Auchenorrhyncha, a group exceeding 12,500 described species worldwide. The name comes from their remarkable resemblance to leaves and other plants of their environment and that they often "hop" for quick transportation in a similar way to that of grasshoppers. However, planthoppers generally walk very slowly. Distributed worldwide, all members of this group are plant-feeders, though few are considered pests. Fulgoromorphs are most reliably distinguished from the other Auchenorrhyncha by two features; the bifurcate (Y-shaped) anal vein in the forewing, and the thickened, three-segmented antennae, with a generally round or egg-shaped second segment (pedicel) that bears a fine filamentous arista. Overview Planthoppers are laterally flattened and hold their broad wings vertically, in a tent-like fashion, concealing the sides of the body and part of the legs. Nymphs of many planthoppers produce wax from ...

Fulgoridae
The family Fulgoridae is a large group of hemipteran insects, especially abundant and diverse in the tropics, containing over 125 genera worldwide. They are mostly of moderate to large size, many with a superficial resemblance to Lepidoptera due to their brilliant and varied coloration. Various genera and species (especially the genera ''Fulgora'' and ''Pyrops'') are sometimes referred to as lanternflies or lanthorn flies. The head of some species is produced into a hollow process (anatomy), process, resembling a snout, which is sometimes inflated and nearly as large as the body of the insect, sometimes elongated, narrow and apically upturned. It was believed, mainly on the authority of Maria Sibylla Merian, that this process, the so-called lantern, was luminous at night in the living insect. Carl Linnaeus adopted the statement without question and coined a number of specific names, such as ''laternaria'', ''phosphorea'' and ''candelaria'' to illustrate the supposed fact, and thus ...

Biology ''Scaralina metcalfi'' typically occurs at higher elevations, above 1000 meters, and is associated with oaks ( ''Quercus'' spp.). Of the three co-occurring species in the area where it is found, it is much rarer than the other two species, and may feed on a rarer host oak species. Distribution ''Scaralina metcalfi'' is found in a subset of the Madrean Sky Islands in Arizona down into Chihuahua. In Arizona, its range is overlapped by the ranges of ''Scaralina aethrinsula'' and ''Scaralina cristata ''Scaralina cristata'' i ...

Insects Described In 1839
Insects (from Latin ') are hexapod invertebrates of the class Insecta. They are the largest group within the arthropod phylum. Insects have a chitinous exoskeleton, a three-part body (head, thorax and abdomen), three pairs of jointed legs, compound eyes, and a pair of antennae. Insects are the most diverse group of animals, with more than a million described species; they represent more than half of all animal species. The insect nervous system consists of a brain and a ventral nerve cord. Most insects reproduce by laying eggs. Insects breathe air through a system of paired openings along their sides, connected to small tubes that take air directly to the tissues. The blood therefore does not carry oxygen; it is only partly contained in vessels, and some circulates in an open hemocoel. Insect vision is mainly through their compound eyes, with additional small ocelli. Many insects can hear, using tympanal organs, which may be on the legs or other parts of the body. The ...
