The ''Sausalito News'' was the local newspaper in Sausalito, Marin County, California. It was published from 1885 to 1960. History The first issue appeared on 12 February 1885. As of early 1900, the paper was published weekly on Saturdays. According to the 1887 ''Rowell's American Newspaper Directory'', the paper positioned itself as "spicy, newsy, saucy and bold" and featured articles on "literary, sporting, society, fashion, scientific and telegraphic" topics. Sausalito
Sausalito (Spanish language, Spanish for "small willow grove") is a city in Marin County, California, Marin County, California, United States, located southeast of Marin City, California, Marin City, south-southeast of San Rafael, California, San Rafael, and about north of San Francisco from the Golden Gate Bridge. Sausalito's population was 7,269 as of the 2020 census. The community is situated near the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge, and prior to the building of that bridge served as a terminus for rail, car, and ferry traffic. Sausalito developed rapidly as a shipbuilding center in World War II, with its industrial character giving way in postwar years to a reputation as a wealthy and artistic enclave, a picturesque residential community (incorporating large numbers of houseboats), and a tourist destination. Marin County is a county located in the northwestern part of the San Francisco Bay Area of the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 262,231. Its county seat and largest city is San Rafael. Marin County is across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, and is included in the San Francisco–Oakland–Berkeley, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The California Digital Newspaper Collection (CDNC) is a freely-available, archive of digitized California newspapers; it is accessible through the project's website. The collection contains over six million pages from over forty-two million articles. The project is part of the Center for Bibliographical Studies and Research (CBSR) at the University of California Riverside. History The Center for Bibliographical Studies and Research was one of six initial participants in the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP), a newspaper digitization project established from a partnership between the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Between 2005 and 2011, the CBSR received three two-year grants, and contributed around 300,000 pages to Chronicling America, the public face of the NDNP.
