Saumarez Island
Saumarez Island (Spanish: ) is an island within the Bernardo O'Higgins National Park in the Patagonian Archipelago of southern Chile. The island was named after Admiral James Saumarez during the first voyage of HMS ''Beagle'' (1826–1830). Saumarez Island lies in a shipping channel between the archipelago and the mainland that avoids the open Pacific Ocean: shipping can pass southwards via the Messier Channel and the ' (Indian Passage), then round Saumarez Island to Wide Channel Wide Channel is an inside passage of the Chilean Patagonia. Magallanes And Antartica Chilena Region
The Magallanes Region (), officially the Magallanes y la Antártica Chilena Region () or Magallanes and the Chilean Antarctica Region in English, is one of Chile's 16 first order administrative divisions. It is the southernmost, largest, and second least populated region of Chile. It comprises four provinces: Última Esperanza, Magallanes, Tierra del Fuego, and Antártica Chilena. The region takes its name from the Strait of Magellan which runs through it, which was in turn named after Ferdinand Magellan, the leader of the European expedition that discovered it. Bernardo O'Higgins National Park
Bernardo O'Higgins National Park () is the largest of the protected areas in Chile, covering an area of , in both the Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Region, Aysén and Magallanes and Antartica Chilena Region, Magallanes and Antártica Chilena regions. HMS Beagle
HMS ''Beagle'' was a 10-gun brig-sloop of the Royal Navy, one of more than 100 ships of this class. The vessel, constructed at a cost of £7,803, was launched on 11 May 1820 from the Woolwich Dockyard on the River Thames. Later reports say the ship took part in celebrations of the coronation of George IV, passing under the old London Bridge, and was the first rigged man-of-war afloat upriver of the bridge. There was no immediate need for ''Beagle'', so she " lay in ordinary", moored afloat but without masts or rigging. She was then adapted as a survey barque and took part in three survey expeditions. Messier Channel
Messier Channel is a channel (geography), channel located in western Patagonia, Chile. It trends north–south between Wellington Island and other Pacific islands and the continent. Maritime traffic traveling south from the Gulf of Penas passes between Wager Island to the west and the Larenas Peninsula to the east to enter the Messier Channel. There is a List of lighthouses in Chile: NGA2044–NGA2324, lighthouse (National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, NGA 2044) on Islote San Pedro, which is just to the east of Wager Island. Continuing further south, ships pass by Prat Island, Serrano Island, and Wellington Island. Southward the name of this inside passage changes first to ''Angostura Inglesa'' (English Narrows) and then to ' (Indian Passage).
