Saugus is a New England town, town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States, in the Greater Boston area. The population was 28,619 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. Saugus is known as the site of the first integrated iron works in North America. History Native Americans inhabited the area around Saugus for thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers in the 1620s. Saugus, Santa Clarita, California
Saugus is a neighborhood in Santa Clarita, California. It was one of four communities (with Valencia, Newhall and Canyon Country) that merged in 1987 to create the city of Santa Clarita. Saugus includes the central and north-central portions of the city. It is named after Saugus, Massachusetts, the hometown of Henry Newhall, upon whose land the town was originally built. History Saugus was first named Newhall by Henry Mayo Newhall, who bought the eastern half of the Del Valle family's Rancho San Francisco from a series of speculators. After he moved the town south in 1879, he renamed the original site for his birthplace, Saugus, Massachusetts. The Saugus Cafe was established in 1886 on San Fernando Road (now Railroad Avenue). It is the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Los Angeles County. The Saugus Speedway first opened in 1939, initially known as Bonelli Stadium. Saugus, Montana
Saugus is a rural unincorporated community in Prairie County, Montana, United States, along the Yellowstone River. It was the location of the Custer Creek train wreck. Saugus was once one of the biggest cattle and horse shipping points in eastern Montana. In 1909, then in Custer County, Saugus opened its post office. Saugus was also home to a school. In 1925, the post office was discontinued. The community is now served by the Terry post office (Zip Code 59349). The town was on the Milwaukee Road railroad line. On June 19, 1938, the ''Olympian #15'', a Trans-Missouri passenger train, derailed when bridge piers were undermined by the high water of Custer Creek caused by a cloudburst. Seven of the 11 cars derailed. Of the 175 people aboard, 47 people drowned and 75 were injured. Some bodies were never recovered. The Saugus River is a river in Massachusetts. The river is long, drains a watershed of approximately , and passes through Wakefield, Lynnfield, Saugus, and Lynn as it meanders east and south from its source in Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield (elevation ) to its mouth in Broad Sound. It has at least eight tributaries: the Mill River; Bennets Pond Brook; the Pines River; Hawkes Brook; Crystal Pond Brook; Beaver Dam Brook; Strawberry Brook; and Shute Brook. Although Native Americans called the river ''Aboutsett'' ("winding stream"), European settlers first called it the River at Saugus, where ''Saugus'' (possibly a native word for "long") arguably named the beach running from Swampscott to Revere (there are competing theories as to the origin of the word "Saugus"). 2019 Saugus High School Shooting
On November 14, 2019, at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, California, United States, a school shooting occurred when a student with a pistol, identified as 16-year-old Nathaniel Berhow, shot five schoolmates, killing two, before killing himself. Background As a response to the rise of school shootings elsewhere in the United States, the William S. Hart Union School District had undertaken a number of measures to improve security at the school. According to the district's website, all schools have a school resource officer assigned to each campus. Schools are surrounded by fencing and supervisors monitor those who enter and exit the campus. Saugus High School has fencing and at least a dozen security cameras, but no metal detectors. The gates for the school are routinely locked during instructional time and would be opened only for students to leave for lunch or to leave school at the end of the day. Saugus Middle-High School is an American public secondary school located in Saugus, Massachusetts, United States. It is a part of Saugus Public Schools. Facilities High school Prior to the construction of a dedicated High School building, Saugus High classes were held in the Town Hall (now an American Legion hall) and the top floor of the Roby School. From 1906 to 1955, Saugus High School was located on the corner of Central and Winter Streets. The building was expanded several times to accommodate the growing student population. Saugus Public Schools is the school district of Saugus, Massachusetts, United States. On April 19, 2016, the School Committee of the district voted 4–1 to offer the position of superintendent to David DeRuosi, who previously was superintendent for Malden Public Schools; Liz Marchese was the sole committee member not in favor. He retired from his position at the end of the 2020–2021 school year. On May 4, 2021, the School Committee voted 4–0 to appoint Erin McMahon to succeed DeRuosi when his contract expired June 30, 2021. She was the district's first female superintendent. On November 2, 2023, the school committee unanimously voted to fire McMahon. Former Saugus High School Principal Michael Hashem served as acting superintendent while McMahon was on administrative leave, beginning in January 2023. Saugus Union School District (SUSD) is a public California school district located in Santa Clarita, Los Angeles County, California. The district serves students in grades TK/K-6 in Saugus, most of Valencia, and parts of Canyon Country. There are also pre-school programs on-site at many of the schools. The ''Saugus Advertiser'' was an American newspaper covering the town of Saugus, Massachusetts. It was the newspaper of record in Saugus, as it was the only place Saugus legal notices were printed. History The ''Saugus Advertiser'' was founded by Colonel Alfred Woodward in 1946. He remained the newspaper's publisher until his death in 1970. He was succeeded by his wife, Virginia. In 1983 she sold the paper to Andrew P. Quigley, who also published the ''Chelsea Record'', the '' Winthrop Sun Transcript'' and the ''East Boston Sun-Transcript''. It was later purchased by Neil P. Collins and Mary L. N. McGrew. In 1990 they sold the paper to North Shore Weeklies. In 1996, North Shore Weeklies was dissolved by its parent company, Community Newspaper Company. Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site
Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site is a National Historic Site about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northeast of Downtown Boston in Saugus, Massachusetts. It is the site of the first integrated ironworks in North America, founded by John Winthrop the Younger and in operation between 1646 and approximately 1670. It includes the reconstructed blast furnace, forge, rolling mill, shear, slitter and a quarter-ton trip hammer. The facility is powered by seven large waterwheels, some of which are rigged to work in tandem with huge wooden gears connecting them. It has a wharf to load the iron onto ocean-going vessels, as well as a large, restored 17th-century house. Saugus Speedway was a 1/3 mile racetrack in Saugus, Santa Clarita, California, Saugus, Santa Clarita, California on a site. The track hosted one NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event in 1995, which was won by Ken Schrader. Schrader became the first NASCAR driver to win in a race in all three of the sanctioning body's major series, following previous wins in the NASCAR Cup Series, Winston Cup and NASCAR Xfinity Series, Busch Grand National Series. The stadium was closed on July 19, 1995 and no longer holds races. History The track started out as a rodeo arena called Baker Ranch Stadium in 1927. Its construction was announced in December 1926.
