Satu Salonen
Satu Maarit Anneli Salonen (born 27 February 1973 in Vahto) is a Finnish former cross-country skier who competed from 1993 to 2005. She won a bronze medal at the 4 × 5 km relay in the 1997 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships and had her best finish of 12th in the 5 km event at those same championships. Salonen's best individual finish at the Winter Olympics was seventh in the 10 km at Salt Lake City in 2002. 1996–97 FIS Cross-Country World Cup
The 1996–97 FIS Cross-Country World Cup was the 16th official World Cup season in cross-country skiing for men and ladies. The season began in Kiruna, Sweden, on 23 November 1996 and finished in Holmenkollen, Oslo, Norway, on 15 March 1997. Bjørn Dæhlie of Norway won the overall men's cup, and Yelena Välbe of Russia won the women's. Both skiers won their fifth overall World Cup. The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1999 took place February 19–28, 1999 in Ramsau am Dachstein, Austria. The large hill ski jumping events took place at the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze in Bischofshofen. The 7.5 km Nordic combined sprint event debuted at these championships. FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1997
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1997 took place from February 21 to March 2 at Granåsen Ski Centre in Trondheim, Norway. This event was the first time in consecutive championships that the number or type of events did not change since 1966 and 1970. It also was historical with Russia's Yelena Välbe winning gold in all five women's cross country events, the first person of either sex to do that honor. At Nagano in 1998, the Russians won over the Norwegians, but this time were forced to scratch due to positive drug tests from Larissa Lazutina and Olga Danilova. Race summary In Russia's absence due to doping, Germany took an early lead in the first leg. Switzerland, Slovenia, and Norway trailed after Germany the first leg. Norway went ahead on the second leg, 2.7 seconds ahead of Germany, as they both distanced themselves from Switzerland, which was third. Norway stayed ahead by the third and final exchange, nine seconds over Germany, and another seven seconds ahead of Switzerland. The cross-country skiing events at the 2002 Winter Olympics were marred by drug problems. The winners of three races were disqualified after blood tests showed that three skiers had overly high red blood cell counts indicating the use of darbepoetin, a drug used to treat anemia. At the time, the drug was not specifically listed in the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) list of banned substances, but the Olympic rules generally prohibit doping of any kind, in accordance with its charter.
