Satartia
Satartia is a village in Yazoo County, Mississippi. Per the 2020 Census, the population was 41, Mississippi's smallest incorporated municipality by population. Located on the east bank of the Yazoo River, Satartia was once a thriving river port, and is one of the oldest non-Native settlements in Yazoo County. History Satartia is a Choctaw word meaning "pumpkin place", likely due to the small gourds that grow in the area. In the early 1800s, Satartia was a busy shipping point from which cotton was transported by steamboat to New Orleans along the Yazoo River. During the Civil War, General Grant sailed a gunboat from Vicksburg and captured the village; the Wilson House on Plum Street was used as his headquarters during the occupation. The war also produced the "Satartia Rifles", of the 12th Mississippi Infantry Regiment, a well-regarded Confederate company and recruitment group. Yazoo County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2020 census, the population was 26,743, and was estimated to be 23,024 in 2024. The county seat is Yazoo City. It is named for the Yazoo River, which forms its western border. Its name is said to come from a Choctaw language word meaning "River of Death". History The area which is now Yazoo County was acquired by the State of Mississippi from the Choctaw Indians in 1820. Yazoo County was established on January 21, 1823. It was the 19th county established in the State of Mississippi and remains the largest in area. It was developed for cotton plantations, which lined the major river to have transportation access. Denbury Inc. was a company engaged in hydrocarbon exploration and extraction via enhanced oil recovery, utilizing carbon dioxide to extract petroleum from fields that have been previously exploited. 12th Mississippi Infantry Regiment
The 12th Mississippi Infantry Regiment was a Confederate infantry regiment from Mississippi. As part of the Army of Northern Virginia, the 12th Mississippi fought in many battles of the Eastern theater of the American Civil War before surrendering in April 1865. History The companies of the 12th Regiment were organized in the spring of 1861, initially for state service. The Regiment was sent to Virginia in July, with an original strength of 1,013 men. The 12th arrived too late to participate in the First Battle of Bull Run, and spent the remainder of the year in camp. The 12th's colonel, Richard Griffith was promoted to brigadier general in November and given command of a brigade of Mississippi regiments. Griffith had previously served in the Mexican-American War alongside Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
