Sarah Rudd
Sarah Rudd is one of the early pioneers of sports analytics applied to soccer. In 2011, Rudd developed a method, based on Markov Chains, for evaluating the performance of players. This method was later adopted by several other companies, academics and bloggers to evaluate actions from soccer event data. Soon after presenting her work, Rudd worked for startup StatsDNA which was acquired by Arsenal FC in 2013. She is currently head of Analytics and Software Development at the Arsenal FC Arsenal Football Club, commonly referred to as Arsenal, is a professional football club based in Islington, London, England. Sports analytics are a collection of relevant, historical, statistics that can provide a competitive advantage to a team or individual. Through the collection and analyzation of these data, sports analytics inform players, coaches and other staff in order to facilitate decision making both during and prior to sporting events. The term "sports analytics" was popularized in mainstream sports culture following the release of the 2011 film, ''Moneyball'', in which Oakland Athletics General Manager Billy Beane (played by Brad Pitt) relies heavily on the use of analytics to build a competitive team on a minimal budget. A Markov chain or Markov process is a stochastic model describing a sequence of possible events in which the probability of each event depends only on the state attained in the previous event.
