Sarah Francisco
Sarah Francisco ( – 2 November 1916) was a resident of Adelaide, South Australia. Notorious for her frequent alcohol-related arrests she still holds the record for number of arrests in South Australia and was to spend more than 16 years in gaol despite the majority of her sentences running concurrently and receiving no sentence longer than 12 months. Early life Sarah Francisco was born Sarah Wearing in Ireland around 1839. Her mother died in 1844 and Francisco was brought up by an aunt on a dairy farm. In 1865 her elder sister emigrated to Australia and Francisco followed later, arriving in Adelaide on 7 November 1866. In 1867 she married John "Frank" Francisco, a Genoese sailor and settled down in Port Adelaide. Her husband was a heavy drinker and violent. Port Adelaide is a port-side region of Adelaide, approximately northwest of the Adelaide CBD. Alcoholism
Alcoholism is, broadly, any drinking of alcohol that results in significant mental or physical health problems. Adelaide Gaol
Adelaide Gaol is a former Australian prison located in the Park Lands of Adelaide, in the state of South Australia. The gaol was the first permanent one in South Australia and operated from 1841 until 1988. The Gaol is one of the two oldest buildings still standing in South Australia, the other being Government House which was built at the same time. The prison is now a museum, tourist attraction and function centre. Origins When the first colonists arrived at South Australia in late 1836, any prisoners (there were few at first) were held in irons aboard the ships HMS Buffalo and then Tam O'Shanter. Cheltenham Cemetery (South Australia)
Cheltenham Cemetery, originally the Port Adelaide and Suburban Cemetery, Cheltenham but known as Woodville Cemetery, was established in 1876 by the Port Adelaide Corporation. Funds were allocated for the cemetery by the South Australian colonial administration in 1874. The first recorded burial was Mrs. Hannah Mussared on 27 Jul 1876.
