Sara Estela Ramírez
Sara Estela Ramírez (1881 – August 21, 1910) was a Mexican teacher, journalist, labor organizer, activist, feminist, essayist, and poet, who lived in the U.S. state of Texas. She founded two daily literary periodicals, ''La Corregidora'' and ''Aurora''. She has been considered a key member in the support of the Mexican Liberal Party, Partido Liberal Mexicano, and an early precursor to the modern Chicana feminism, Chicana feminist movement. Biography Ramirez was born in 1881 in Villa de Progreso, Coahuila, Mexico. When she was young her mother died, causing her to have to provide for her father and younger sister. She received her early education in Monterrey before graduating from the teachers' college, Ateneo Fuentes, in Saltillo. She moved to Laredo, Texas, Laredo in 1898 to teach Spanish at Seminario Laredo and remained there until her death. Jovita Idar
Jovita Idar Vivero (September 7, 1885 – June 15, 1946) was an American journalist, teacher, political activist, and civil rights worker who championed the cause of Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrants. Against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution, which lasted a decade from 1910 through 1920, she worked for a series of newspapers, using her writing to work towards making a meaningful and effective change. She began her career in journalism at ''La Crónica'', her father's newspaper in Laredo, Texas, her hometown. While working as a journalist, she became the president of the newly established League of Mexican Women—''La Liga Femenil Mexicanista''—in October 1911, an organization with a focus on offering free education to Mexican children in Laredo. Hispanic and Latino women in America have been involved in journalism for years, using their multilingual skills to reach across cultures and spread news throughout the 19th century until the common era. Hispanic presses provided information important to the Hispanic and Latin American communities and helped to foster and preserve the cultural values that remain today. These presses also "promoted education, provided special-interest columns, and often founded magazines, publishing houses, and bookstores to disseminate the ideas of local and external writers."
