Sanggan River
The Sanggan River or Sanggan He (), also known in English as Sangkan River, is a river in northern China. It runs 506 kilometers and has a drainage area of 23,900 square kilometers. In addition to its significance in hydrology, it is culturally significant as it has been mentioned in various poems, essays, and novels, including a poem by Chen Tao and an award-winning novel ''The Sun Shines Over Sanggan River'' by Ding Ling.Davis, 80 (note 1, on page 29) It is also one of the rivers that gave birth to early civilizations. Geology The Sangan River is a part of the drainage system of Hai River. It originates in Shanxi Province. It merges with the Yang He (洋河) in Hebei Province and then flows into the Guanting Reservoir. Guanting Reservoir
Guanting Reservoir (), also known as Guanting Shuiku, is the first large-scale reservoir after the founding of the People's Republic of China. Guanting Reservoir is located at the junction of Beijing and Hebei Province, mostly in Huailai County, Hebei Province, and a small part in Yanqing County, Beijing. The reservoir is named after the dam built near the Guanting Town (官厅镇). History Guanting Reservoir started construction in October 1951 and was completed on 13 May 1954, with the main flow of water being the Yongding River in Huailai. The reservoir covers an area of 230 square kilometers and has a total storage capacity of 2.2 billion cubic meters. Nathan Sivin
Nathan Sivin (11 May 1931 – 24 June 2022), also known as Xiwen (), was an American sinologist, historian, essayist, educator, and writer. He taught first at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, then at the University of Pennsylvania until his retirement in 2006. The major areas of study and focus in Nathan Sivin's career and publications were history of science and technology in China, medicine in traditional China, Chinese philosophy, and Chinese religious beliefs. He was a key player in the development of their scholarly study in the West. He collaborated with prominent scholars, such as G.E.R. Lloyd, A.C. Graham and Joseph Needham, and nurtured younger ones. Zhuolu County
Zhuolu County () is a county in the northwest of Hebei province, bordering Beijing's Mentougou District to the east. It is under the administration of the Zhangjiakou city. It has eight towns, nine townships, and 373 village-level units (). Yongding River
The Yongding River () is a river in northern China. It is one of the main tributaries in the Hai River system and is the largest river to flow through Beijing. In recent years, the Beijing segment of the river has dried up due to environmental issues. The Beijing municipal government has invested 16 billion yuan in an effort to replace the riverbed with parkland or smaller bodies of water. Etymology The river was originally called Wuding River (), literally "unfixed river", because its flow was irregular. When the Kangxi Emperor reigned, he enacted various hydraulic engineering projects in the region to rein in the seasonal flooding. Ding Ling ( zh, c=丁玲, p=Dīng Líng; October 12, 1904 – March 4, 1986), formerly romanized as Ting Ling, was the pen name of Jiang Bingzhi ( zh, s=蒋冰之, t=蔣冰之, p=Jiǎng Bīngzhī), also known as Bin Zhi (彬芷 ''Bīn Zhǐ''), one of the most celebrated Chinese women authors of the 20th century. She is known for her feminist and socialist realist literature. Ding was active in leftist literary circles connected to the Chinese Communist Party and was imprisoned by the Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang or "KMT") for her politics. Chen Tao (poet)
Chen Tao (, 824-882) was a poet of the late Tang dynasty. He wrote four poems about war in Longxi, one of which was included in the anthology '' Three Hundred Tang Poems''. Some of his other poems were anthologized in ''Quantangshi'' (also known as, the ''Collected Tang Poems''). The poem appearing in the ''Three Hundred Tang Poems'' is the well-known verse sometimes known as "Lung-hsi Song". Hai River
The Hai River (海河, lit. "Sea River"), also known as the Peiho, ("White River"), or Hai Ho, is a Chinese river connecting Beijing to Tianjin and the Bohai Sea. During the Song dynasty, the main stream of the Hai River was called the lower section of the Jie River.
