The Sanford and Indian River Railroad was a historic railroad in Central Florida running from Sanford southeast to Oviedo and Lake Charm, a distance of 20 miles. The railroad dates back to the late 1800s and parts of it are still active today. Route description The Sanford and Indian River Railroad began at a junction with the South Florida Railroad in Sanford. The junction with the South Florida Railroad main line in Sanford was located on 9th Street just west of Holly Avenue. From Sanford, the railroad ran south and southwest to the western end of Lake Jesup. At Lake Jesup, it turned east through present-day Winter Springs and Oviedo before coming to an end at Lake Charm. The Seaboard Air Line Railroad's Orlando Subdivision (T Line) was a rail line connecting the Seaboard Air Line's network to Orlando, Florida. Beginning at the Seaboard Air Line's main line in Wildwood, it ran southeast through Leesburg, Florida, Tavares, and Apopka to Orlando. From Orlando, the line continued northeast to Winter Park and Oviedo before coming to an end at Lake Charm. History The Orlando Subdivision was built by predecessors of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. The Leesburg and Indian River Railroad was incorporated in 1884, and they built line from Wildwood east to Tavares, with plans to continue east to Titusville. The Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad was the final name of a system of railroads throughout Florida, becoming part of the Seaboard Air Line Railway in 1900. The system, including some of the first railroads in Florida, stretched from Jacksonville west through Tallahassee and south to Tampa. Much of the FC&P network is still in service under the ownership of CSX Transportation. History The Tallahassee Rail Road was first organized in 1832 as the Leon Railway, changing its name in 1834. It opened in 1837, connecting Tallahassee, Florida to the Gulf of Mexico port of St. Marks, Florida. The Florida Midland Railway Company was incorporated under the general incorporation laws of Florida, and surveyed a line from Lake Jessup, in Orange County, to Leesburg, in Lake County. History The company was reincorporated on February 10, 1885; only had been graded. The new owners were E. W. Henck, S. M. Breuster, Carl Cushing, A. Menser and C. E. Munson of Florida, and Edward Page, Charles W. Morris and Cyrus Carpenter of Boston, Massachusetts. Cross Seminole Trail
The Cross Seminole Trail is a pedestrian, bicycle, and equestrian trail in Seminole County, Florida just north of Orlando. The first segment opened in 2002. The current route begins at the intersection of Aloma and Howell Branch where it meets the Cady Way Trail in Winter Park through Oviedo and Winter Springs and stretches into Lake Mary. The trail is long, or including the Orange County trail extension. The trail connects to Seminole Wekiva Trail in Lake Mary. Sanford station is a railroad terminal in Sanford, Florida. It is the southern terminus for Amtrak's ''Auto Train,'' which runs between this station and Lorton, Virginia. As of 2022, the Auto Train loads its passengers on two tracks in Sanford, as no single track is long enough for all of the passenger railcars. A railroad crossing runs through the middle of Sanford's rail yard, an unusual situation for a modern station and yard.
