Sanford (crater)
Sanford is a lunar impact crater that is located in the northern latitudes on the Moon's far side. It lies to the south-southeast of the crater Klute, and just to the west-northwest of Teisserenc. Lunar Orbiter 5, the last of the "Lunar Orbiter series", was designed to take additional Project Apollo, Apollo and Surveyor program, Surveyor landing site photography and to take broad survey images of unphotographed parts of the Moon's far side. It was also equipped to collect selenodetic, radiation intensity, and micrometeoroid impact data and was used to evaluate the Manned Space Flight Network tracking stations and Apollo Orbit Determination Program. Roscoe Frank Sanford
Roscoe Frank Sanford (October 6, 1883 – April 7, 1958) was an American astronomer. He was born in Faribault, Minnesota, the eldest of five children of Frank W. Sanford and his wife Alberta Nichols. After an early education in his home town he attended the University of Minnesota, where he received an A.B. in 1905. He was also a runner up for a Rhodes scholarship. He taught High School students for a year then became an assistant at the Lick Observatory. The Carnegie Institute of Washington approved plans by Lewis Boss for an observation station in South America, and Roscoe Sanford was selected to travel there as an assistant. The nine-man group spent nearly two years making observations of the brightest-magnitude stars in the southern hemisphere, with Roscoe making telescope observations and meridian-circle readings. Klute (crater)
Klute is a crater on the Moon's far side. It lies to the southeast of the larger walled plain Fowler, and east of the crater Gadomski. Klute is a heavily worn crater with multiple smaller craters along the outer rim. The satellite crater Klute W impacted to the northwest of Klute, and a large slump or landslide has occurred where material has flowed into the unnamed crater within Klute. Joule is a lunar impact crater that lies on the far side of the Moon. It is located to the north-northeast of the walled plain Mach. To the northwest of Joule is the crater Blazhko. This is a worn and eroded crater formation. A pair of smaller craters lies along the northeastern rim, and a crater is intruding into the northwest rim. To the south is an outward projection that has the appearance of a crater partly overlain by Joule. The remainder of the rim and inner wall is somewhat irregular. The interior floor is more level than the terrain surrounding the crater, but is marked by some small craterlets. At the midpoint of the interior floor is a central peak.
