Sandy And Beaver Canal
The Sandy and Beaver Canal was a canal and lock transportation system which ran seventy-three miles from the Ohio and Erie Canal at Bolivar, Ohio, to the Ohio River at Glasgow, Pennsylvania. It was chartered in 1828 and completed twenty years later. It ceased operations in 1852. History and features In 1828, Major D.B. Douglas of the United States Military Academy surveyed potential new canal routes, including the site that would ultimately be chosen as the location for the Sandy and Beaver Canal. The canal was then chartered later that year. Completed in 1848, it had ninety locks. From the time of its opening, however, its middle section had repeated problems and ultimately fell into disrepair. The canal ceased to operate in 1852, when the Cold Run Reservoir Dam outside of Lisbon, Ohio failed, ruining a large section of the canal. The Hanoverton Canal Town District is a historic district in Hanoverton, Ohio, United States, that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP. Description The district covers a area along U.S. Route 30. It is characterized by examples of canal-era architecture of the early to mid-19th century. Magnolia is a village in Carroll and Stark counties in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 1,013 at the time of the 2020 census. It is part of the Canton–Massillon metropolitan area. History In 1834 Richard Elson and John W. Smith laid out the village of Magnolia in Sandy Township. In 1836, Isaac Miller platted the village of Downingville in Rose Township. Downingville was named after the Downes family, early pioneers that came over from Ireland and England. The towns merged and became Magnolia on February 1, 1846. The village took its name from Magnolia Mills, a local gristmill. The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District constructed the Magnolia Levee to protect the town from Bolivar Dam.
