San Silvestro, Troina
San Silvestro is a Roman Catholic parish church located on Via Sccaone, along SS120, in the town of Troina, in the province of Enna, region of Sicily, Italy. History and Description A small church at this site, dedicated to St Bartholemew was present by the 13th-century; in this century, the tomb and body of St Silvester of Troina, a basilian monk and patron of the town, were putatively discovered. The church was granted to the Confraternity of San Silvestro in 1436. A new church was erected and the saint is now buried in the chapel crypt. The present church is the result of refurbishment in the 19th century. A central nave is separated from the aisles by solid stone columns with Corinthian capitals. The simplicity of the walls and the wooden choir stalls above a domed apse are completed in a late Renaissance style. The facade is simply articulated with pilasters. The nave leads to a domed apse. Troina
Troina ( Sicilian: ''Traina'') is a town and ''comune'' (municipality) in the province of Enna, Sicily, southern Italy. It is located in the Nebrodi Park. History Excavations have proved that the area of Troina was settled as early as the 7th millennium BC (a farm dating from that period, and a later necropolis). Of the Greek town (most likely known as '' Engyon'') parts of the 4th-century-BC walls remain, while from the Roman age are baths. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire it was a Byzantine stronghold and during the Islamic period the religious and moral capital of the Greek and Christian orthodox part of Sicily; Roger I of Sicily had in its castle (which he captured in 1061) also a start base of his conquest of the island. During World War II, Troina was the site of a battle between the Allies and the Axis forces. The town was mostly destroyed during the six-day fighting (31 July – 6 August 1943). Antonello Gagini
Antonello Gagini (1478–1536) was an Italian sculptor of the Renaissance, mainly active in Sicily and Calabria. Antonello belonged to a family of sculptors and artisans, originally from Northern Italy, but active throughout Italy, including Genoa, Florence, and Rome. The family included his father, Domenico (1449–1492), also a sculptor. Antonello had five sons who were sculptors: Antonio (or Antonino; 1510s-1574), Fazio (1520s-1567), Giacomo (1517–1598), Giandomenico (1503-1560s), and Vicenzo (1527–1595). Antonello was born, in 1478, in Palermo, where the Gagini family had settled in 1463. Antonello is said to have aided MichelangeloKruft, Hanno-Walter (1975).
