San Sebastiano Triptych
The San Sebastiano Triptych is a 1464–1470 tempera-on-panel altarpiece by the Italian Renaissance artist Giovanni Bellini and others. Its central panel of saint Sebastian measures 127 by 48 cm, its lunette of God the Father and the Annunciation 59 by 170 cm and its side panels of John the Baptist and Antony the Great 103 by 45 cm. It is now in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. It is one of four triptychs produced between 1464 and 1470 for Santa Maria della Carità, Venice, which had been rebuilt in the 1450s and whose altars were built between 1460 and 1464. The other three are the San Lorenzo, Madonna and Nativity Triptychs. They were probably all planned by Giovanni's father Jacopo. Giovanni's contribution to the actual painting was mainly to the saints on the ''San Sebastiano'', setting an important precedent for his first major solo work, the San Vincenzo Ferrer Altarpiece. Giovanni Bellini
Giovanni Bellini (; c. 1430 – 26 November 1516) was an Italian Renaissance painter, probably the best known of the Bellini family of Venetian painters. Bartolomeo Vivarini
Bartolomeo or Bartolommeo Vivarini (c. 1432c. 1499) was an Italian Renaissance painter, known to have worked from 1450 to 1499. Biography Bartolomeo's brother Antonio Vivarini, and his nephew (also possibly his pupil) Alvise Vivarini, were also painters. He learned oil painting from Antonello da Messina, and is said to have produced, in 1473, the first oil picture done in Venice. Housed in the basilica of San Zanipolo, it is a large altar-piece in nine divisions, representing Augustine and other saints. Most of his works, however, are in tempera. His outline is always hard, and his colour good; the figures have much dignified and devout expression. The fall of the Republic of Venice was a series of events that culminated on 12 May 1797 in the dissolution and dismemberment of the Republic of Venice at the hands of Napoleon Bonaparte and Habsburg Austria. In 1796, the young general Napoleon had been sent by the newly-formed French Republic to confront Austria, as part of the French Revolutionary Wars. He chose to go through Venice, which was officially neutral. Reluctantly, the Venetians allowed the formidable French army to enter their country so that it might confront Austria. However, the French covertly began supporting Jacobin revolutionaries within Venice, and the Venetian senate began quietly preparing for war. The ''Saint Vincent Ferrer Altarpiece'' is a tempera on panel painting by Giovanni Bellini (possibly with some collaboration by another artist on the scenes of Ferrer's miracles on the predella, perhaps Lauro Padovano), dating to 1464–1470 and still in on the altar dedicated to Saint Vincent Ferrer at Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Venice, for which it was originally commissioned. Jacopo Bellini
Jacopo Bellini (c. 1400 – c. 1470) was one of the founders of the Renaissance style of painting in Venice and northern Italy. His sons Gentile and Giovanni Bellini, and his son-in-law Andrea Mantegna, were also famous painters. Few of Bellini's paintings still exist, but his surviving sketch-books (one in the British Museum and one in the Louvre) show an interest in landscape and elaborate architectural design and are his most important legacy.
