San Moderanno, Berceto
San Moderanno, also known as the ''Duomo of Berceto'' is a Romanesque-style, Roman Catholic church, formerly attached to an abbey, located on Piazza Duomo in the town of Berceto in the region of Emilia-Romagna, Italy. History The church arose alongside a Benedictine monastery founded in 719 by Liutprand, King of the Lombards. Originally attached to Bishop Moderanno of Renne, in 879, the monastery was assigned to the diocese of Parma, only to close in the following century, and the property being renamed a ''pieve'', or rural parish, dedicated to ''San Moderanno''. The convent was along the routes of pilgrimage to Rome. The church was rebuilt in the 12th century, and the main portals date from this era. ''Duomo'' (, ) is an Italian term for a church with the features of, or having been built to serve as, a cathedral, whether or not it currently plays this role. Monza Cathedral, for example, has never been a diocesan seat and is by definition not a cathedral. On the other hand, the city of Trevi no longer has a bishop, although it once did, and the erstwhile cathedral of Emilianus of Trevi is now a mere church. By contradistinction, the Italian word for a cathedral ''sensu stricto'' is ''cattedrale''. There is no direct translation of "duomo" into English, leading to many such churches being erroneously called "cathedral" in English, regardless of whether the church in question hosts a bishop. Many people refer to particular churches simply as ''il Duomo'', the ''Duomo'', without regard to the full proper name of the church. Romanesque architecture is an architectural style of medieval Europe characterized by semi-circular arches. There is no consensus for the beginning date of the Romanesque style, with proposals ranging from the 6th to the 11th century, this later date being the most commonly held. Berceto
Berceto (Parmigiano dialect, Parmigiano: , or ; lij, Bercèi) is a village and ''comune'' in Italy, located in the Apennine Mountains on the main road between La Spezia and Parma, in the Taro River valley, in the region of Emilia-Romagna. The main church in the city is the Duomo of San Moderanno, Berceto, San Moderanno founded in the 9th century and with Lombard era sculptures. Other sights include the remains of the Castle of Berceto as well as those of Pietramogolana and Roccaprebalza. Berceto was the birthplace of condottiero Pier Maria II de' Rossi. Liutprand, King Of The Lombards
Liutprand was the king of the Lombards from 712 to 744 and is chiefly remembered for his multiple phases of law-giving, in fifteen separate sessions from 713 to 735 inclusive, and his long reign, which brought him into a series of conflicts, mostly successful, with most of Italy. He is often regarded as the most successful Lombard monarch, notable for the Donation of Sutri in 728, which was the first accolade of sovereign territory to the Papacy. Early life Liutprand's life began inauspiciously. His father was driven to exile among the Bavarians, his older brother Sigipert was blinded by Aripert II, king of the Lombards, and his mother Theodarada and sister Aurona were mutilated (their noses and ears were cut off).
