San Giuseppe, Milan
San Giuseppe is a Baroque-style Roman Catholic church in Milan, region of Lombardy, Italy. Construction was begun in 1607 and completed in 1630. The architect was Francesco Maria Richini. The right side of the church overlooks Via Andegari, after a family with this name. It seems that the title of the street comes from the name of a family known as the "Andegardi" or "undegardi". The interior contains large altarpieces depicting the ''Marriage of St Joseph and the Virgin Mary'' by Melchiorre Gherardini; the ''Death of St Joseph'' by Giulio Cesare Procaccini; a ''Holy Family'' by Andrea Lanzani; and a ''St John the Baptist'' by Stefano Montalti. Province Of Milan
The province of Milan () was a province in the Lombardy region of Italy. Its capital was the city of Milan. Francesco Maria Richini
Francesco Maria Richini (also spelled Ricchini) (9 February 1584 – 24 April 1658) was an Italian Baroque architect. Biography He was born in Milan, Italy, and trained under Lorenzo Binago. He was patronized by Cardinal Federico Borromeo, Archbishop of Milan. After a stint in Rome, he became ''capomastro ''under the main architect of the Cathedral of the city, Aurelio Trezzi, in 1605. He was elevated to the latter's position himself from 1631 to 1638. Like his famous elder cousin, Carlo Borromeo, author of a guide to religious architecture, Federico Borromeo promulgated classical or antique models. In Richini he found a deviation to the Baroque, as exemplified by his churches of Santa Maria alla Porta and of San Giuseppe. Baroque architecture is a highly decorative and theatrical style which appeared in Italy in the late 16th century and gradually spread across Europe. Melchiorre Gherardini
Melchiorre Gherardini (1607–1668), known as Ceranino, was an Italian painter. Biography Born in Milan in 1607, Gherardini was closely linked in his artistic career to Giovan Battista Crespi, known as Cerano, his master and father-in-law. On Cerano's death, he inherited his workshop and house, where he is documented as resident with his wife from 1633 on. This was also the year when he adopted the byname ''Ceranino'' in order to celebrate the memory of the great figure of 17th-century painting and the Milanese Borromeo tradition. He died in Milan in 1668 after producing a vast amount of work of a primarily religious character based on the models of Cerano with a particular focus of the theatrical elements. Giulio Cesare Procaccini
Giulio Cesare Procaccini (1574–1625) was an Italian painter and sculptor of the early Baroque era in Milan. Biography Born in Bologna he was son of the Mannerist painter Ercole Procaccini the Elder and brother of Camillo Procaccini and Carlo Antonio Procaccini. The family moved to Milan around 1585 with the help of the rich art collector Pirro Visconti. He began as a sculptor in the Cathedral and in the Milanese church of Santa Maria presso San Celso. In 1610 he painted six of the '' Quadroni'', large canvases celebrating Saint Charles Borromeo. Among his many altarpieces are the ''Circumcision'' (c.1616) now in Galleria Estense, Modena, and the ''Last Supper'' (1616) for Convent associated with the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato in Genoa. Andrea Lanzani
Andrea Lanzani (c.1645 – 30 May 1712) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period. Biography Born in Milan in 1641, Lanzani initially apprenticed in the workshop of Luigi Scaramuccia, where he met Andrea Pozzo, a marked influence on his early work. An immediate result of his enrolment at the reopened Ambrosian Academy 1669 was a large-scale depiction of the translation of the remains of Saint Calimerus, painted in 1670 and today in the Ambrosian Library. He made his first trip to Rome in 1674 where he studied under Carlo Maratta, but ten years later returned to Milan. He left Milan in 1697 to spend a year in Vienna, where he returned at the beginning of the new century and stayed for eight years.
