San Diego Yacht Club
San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC) is a private yacht club in San Diego, California. Founded in 1886, it is one of the oldest in the United States. The club won the America's Cup in 1987, 1988, and 1992. History In June 1886, local boating enthusiasts founded San Diego Yacht Club. SDYC’s first home was in Ballast Point in 1891 in Point Loma. In 1905, SDYC merged with the Corinthian Yacht Club. In 1910, SDYC purchased Silver Gate, an old Coronado ferry, and towed it to the foot of Hawthorn Street. The club built a pier to Silver Gate'','' and installed facilities around it, moving on from the original clubhouse on D Street. In 1914, Silver Gate moved across the bay near the Coronado ferry dock. ''Silver Gate'' was sold in 1919 and the club was without a clubhouse for a few years until a new clubhouse was built on Coronado in 1923. A yacht club is a boat club specifically related to yachting. Description Yacht clubs are mostly located by the sea, although there some that have been established at a lake or riverside locations. Yacht or sailing clubs have either a marina or a delimited section of the beach or shoreline with buoys marking the areas off-limits for swimmers as well as safe offshore anchorages. On shore they also include a perimeter reserved for the exclusive use of the members of the club as well as a clubhouse with attached bar, café or restaurant where members socialize in a pleasant and informal setting. ''America³'' (USA–23) (pronounced "America cubed") was an American International America's Cup Class yacht that successfully defended the 1992 America's Cup challenge from the Il Moro Challenge racing syndicate. ''America³'' was one of four yachts built for the America3 Foundation racing syndicate, headed by American businessman Bill Koch, for the 1992 Citizen Cup. It was launched in 1992. ''America³'' won the Citizen Cup, then successfully defended the America's Cup against the challenge of the Italian yacht ''Il Moro di Venezia V'' (ITA-25), winner of the 1992 Louis Vuitton Cup. Lowell North
Lowell Orton North (December 2, 1929 – June 2, 2019) was an American competitive sailor and Olympic gold medalist. He competed at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, where he received a gold medal in the Star class with the boat ''North Star'', together with Peter Barrett. Biography North was born in Springfield, Missouri on December 2, 1929. He was the son of Williard North, a geophysicist for oil companies, and Juanita Williams North, a homemaker. When Lowell was young the family moved to Southern California, where he learned to sail in Newport Beach and later in San Diego. He got his start as a sailmaker at the age of 14, when he and his father raced Star class boats and regularly lost. He recut the sail and improved their record. Mark Reynolds (sailor)
Mark Jeffrey Reynolds (born November 2, 1955) is an American Star class sailor and Olympic champion. He has sailed Stars since age four, training with his father James Reynolds who was the 1971 World Champion (as crew for Dennis Conner). Reynolds competed at multiple Olympics, medaling in 1988 and 1992. In 1996 he came in eighth. Afterwards he formed a new partnership with crewman Magnus Liljedahl, and they went on to win a string of championships, culminating with a gold medal at the 2000 Olympics. Reynolds sailed for San Diego State University, where he received a BS. As a sophomore, Mark was All American on the San Diego State University sailing team in 1974. Mark led the team to a 2nd place finish both in 1974 and 1975 in the North American Dinghy Championships. He also holds an honorary doctorate from Piedmont College. John Gerald "Gerry" Driscoll III (1924 – March 12, 2011) was an international yachting champion and businessman from San Diego, California. He competed in the defense portion of four America's Cup races (1964, 1967, 1970, and 1974), and was part of the organizational effort for two others. His innovative year-round training regimen for the 1974 race permanently changed the way teams prepare for the America's Cup.
