San Diego Country Club
San Diego Country Club is a private golf club in Chula Vista, California. It was founded in 1897. The club features an 18-hole golf course with a par of 72. The golf course was designed in 1921 by golf course architect Willie Watson and remodeled by William Francis Bell (Billy Bell Jr.) to add additional length and bunkering. History In 1897, the club's first facility of 9 holes was built in Balboa Park. It was enlarged in 1898 to accommodate and keep the changing rooms of female and male club members separate. However, in 1914 the club was evicted to make way for construction necessary for the 1915 Pan-American Exposition. Later, the club was merged with Point Loma Golf Club located in Loma Portal, the area close to the present-day San Diego International Airport. William Francis Bell
William Francis Bell (August 8, 1918 – September 20, 1984) was a golf course architect, active from the 1960s into the early 1980s. Biography William Francis Bell was born in Pasadena, California, the son of noted architect William Park Bell, and was affectionately known as "Billy Bell Jr.". He studied at University of Southern California in Los Angeles. The courses Bell designed are predominantly located in the Western United States. Bell is considered a commercial golf course architect with more than 200 courses credited to his work and design, mostly in the American West and Hawaii. Notably, Bell was the golf architect for Torrey Pines Golf Course, both Torrey Pines North course and Torrey Pines South course, site of the 2008 and 2021 US Open. The Pan-American Exposition was a world's fair held in Buffalo, New York, United States, from May 1 through November 2, 1901. Loma Portal (from Latin ''porta'' "gate") is a neighborhood in the community of Point Loma in San Diego, California. It is a hilly area northwest of Rosecrans Street and northeast of Nimitz Boulevard, overlooking San Diego Bay.
