Samuel Wynn
Samuel Wynn (4 April 1891 – 17 June 1982) was an Australian Jewish community leader, restaurateur, wine and spirits merchant and Zionist. Wynn was born in Ushimow, Russia (modern Poland), named Shlomo ben David and was the son of Michael David Weintraub and his wife Rivkah, née Feigenbaum Wynn started his entrepreneurial career in 1918 when he purchased a shop in Bourke Street licensed to sell 'colonial wine' and in 1920 when he bought the Café Denat, which later became the Grossi Florentino Grossi Florentino is one of Melbourne’s oldest restaurants. Grossi Florentino
Grossi Florentino is one of Melbourne’s oldest restaurants. The upstairs Mural Room has been a fine-dining institution since the 1930s. History Florentino started out as a wine shop at 78 Bourke Street, bought by recent immigrant Samuel Wynn in 1918, which he then gradually expanded whilst living upstairs. Wynn's wine selling interest gradually moved into wine making, and he went on after WW2 to purchase the Coonawarra Estate vineyard, making Wynn's a household name. In 1920 he purchased the nearby popular Café Denat which he relocated into his former home upstairs in 1924. Rinaldo Massoni then leased the ‘Café Denat’ in 1928, and changed the name to Café Florentino and the style from French to Italian. Australian Jews, or Jewish Australians, ( he, יהודים אוסטרלים, translit=yehudim ostralim) are Jews who are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia. In the 2016 census, there were 21,175 Australians who identified as Jewish by ancestry, a decrease from 25,716 in the 2011 census, and 91,016 Australians who identified as adherents of Judaism, which is a 6% decrease on 97,355 adherents of Judaism in the 2011 census. The actual number is almost certainly higher, because an answer to the religion question on the census was optional and because Holocaust survivors, Haredi Jews or many non-practising Jews are believed to prefer not to disclose religion in the census.
