Samuel W. Arnold
Samuel Washington (Wat) Arnold (September 21, 1879 – December 18, 1961) was a U.S. Representative from Missouri. Early life and career Born on September 21, 1879, on a farm near Downing in Schuyler County, Missouri, he was the son of Cumberland Wilson Arnold and Mary Elizabeth (Hill) Arnold. He attended the Coffey, Missouri, rural school, then advanced to the North Missouri Normal School (now known as Truman State University) in Kirksville, Missouri, graduating in 1902. After a brief career as a teacher and superintendent in several rural northeast Missouri schools, Mr. Arnold moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1904 for employment with the internal revenue office. It was also in 1904, on Christmas Eve, that Sam married his wife Myra Gertrude Mills. The following year, 1905, the Arnolds moved to Atlanta, Missouri, where he began a fifty-plus-year career as a lumberman. Downing, Missouri
Downing is a city in Schuyler County, Missouri, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, its population was 300. It is part of the Kirksville micropolitan area, Missouri, Kirksville Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Although not being laid out as a town until 1872, the Downing area was one of the earliest settled areas of Schuyler County, with Henry Downing building a home and claiming land a few miles south of the area circa 1837. It was also near present-day Downing that the first school in the county was established. In the spring of 1841, a crude log cabin was built for this purpose near Henry Downing's home and Miss Esther Hathaway was employed as a teacher. KIRX (1450 AM, "NewsTalk & Good Time Oldies") is a radio station licensed to the city of Kirksville, Missouri and serves the northeast Missouri area. History On February 1, 1947, an application for KIRX was filed with the Federal Communications Commission by North Missouri Broadcasting Company, a group consisting of U.S. Congressman Samuel W. Arnold, Sam A. Burk, and Congressman Arnold's son, local businessman Sam M. Arnold. Approval from the FCC was granted on May 1, 1947 to operate KIRX on 1450kc at 250 watts power from a tower height of 150 feet. Office, studio, and tower construction had already begun in anticipation of the authorization, so KIRX was ready to begin broadcasting at noon on October 17, 1947. Atlanta is a city in Macon County, Missouri, United States. The population was 379 at the 2020 census. History Atlanta was platted in 1858. The community was named after Atlanta, Georgia. A post office called Atlanta has been in operation since 1868. On May 6, 1935, TWA Flight 6, a TWA DC-2 en route from Los Angeles, California, to Washington, D.C., became lost in heavy fog near Atlanta. Running out of fuel, the pilot attempted an emergency landing but crashed, which killed four and injured several others. Among the dead was Senator Bronson Cutting of New Mexico.
