Samuel Mitchell (Western Australian Politician)
Samuel Mitchell (c. 1838 – 5 July 1912) was an Australian businessman and politician who was a pioneer of the mining industry in Western Australia. He served in both houses of the Parliament of Western Australia, as a member of the Legislative Council from 1884 to 1885 and a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1897 to 1901. Early life and business career Mitchell was born in Redruth, Cornwall, the son of a mining engineer, and worked in the Cornish tin mines from a young age. From there he was recruited as mine captain for the Geraldine Lead Mine, located on the Murchison River near Northampton, the first commercial mine in the colony. He, his brother James and a party of seven Cornish miners arrived at Fremantle aboard ''Zephyr'' on 13 November 1867. Mitchell later opened the Wheal Ellen and Badra lead mines, near Northampton, and in 1872 was elected to the Mines Roads Board. Samuel Mitchell VC (8 September 1841 – 16 March 1894) was a Royal Navy sailor and a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Early life Samuel Mitchell was born in Aspley in Bedfordshire, England, on 8 September 1841. His father was a labourer who later became a minister in a Wesleyan church. Mitchell joined the Royal Navy in 1857, shortly before his 16th birthday. Military career Mitchell served aboard HMS ''Crocodile'' and later the shore station in Portsmouth, . In 1860 he was posted to , which was destined for service on the Australian Station. Operating out of Sydney, the Australian Station area of operations encompassed both Australia and New Zealand. Samuel Alfred Mitchell
Samuel Alfred Mitchell (April 29, 1874 – February 22, 1960) was a Canadian-American astronomer who studied solar eclipses and set up a program to use photographic techniques to determine the distance to stars at McCormick Observatory, where he served as the director. Early years Mitchell was born in Kingston, Ontario, the son of John Cook and Sarah Chown Mitchell, the sixth of ten children to grow up in the Mitchell home. Mitchell's father (a tenth child) emigrated to Canada from St. Austell, Cornwall. His mother, born in Kingston, was the tenth child of parents who emigrated to Canada from Devonshire. At age twelve Mitchell went off to Kingston Collegiate Institute. From there, he went on to Queen's University where he received his Masters of Arts in mathematics in 1894. Samuel Augustus Mitchell (1790, Bristol, Connecticut – December 20, 1868, Philadelphia) was an American geographer. He was born in Connecticut. Mitchell worked as a teacher before turning to publishing geography textbooks and maps. He became involved in geography after teaching and realizing that there were so many poor quality geographical resources available to teachers. He moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in either 1829 or 1830. He was in Philadelphia when he founded his company. His son, S. Augustus Mitchell, became owner in 1860. Their publications covered all genres of geography: maps, travel guides, textbooks, and more. Sales of his 24 works reached an annual volume of over 400,000 copies. Samuel Brown Wylie Mitchell
Samuel Brown Wylie Mitchell (August 16, 1828 – August 16, 1879) is the initial founder of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity, the first fraternity at the University of Pennsylvania. Mitchell was also a doctor and physician in the Union Army, distinguished member of the Masons and an active social member of Philadelphia. He was a co-founder, on April 15, 1865, of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, or MOLLUS, the first post-Civil War veteran's organization. He bore Companion #00001. The organization, which welcomed those who had served in the suppression of the Rebellion, and were at some point in their careers commissioned officers in the military service of the United States, exists today. Samuel James Mitchell
Samuel James Mitchell (11 May 1852 – 3 October 1926) was an Australian politician and judge. He was a member of the South Australian House of Assembly from 1901 to 1910, representing the Northern Territory. He was Government Resident of the Northern Territory and the inaugural judge of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory from 1910 to 1912. He returned to South Australia after 1912, serving as a judge in various capacities until his death. Early life Mitchell was born near Mount Barker in South Australia. He was educated at R. C. Mitton's Grammar school in Adelaide. He worked at Mount Gambier and Melrose before moving to Port Augusta in 1871 and working as an auctioneer. Samuel is a figure who, in the narratives of the Hebrew Bible, plays a key role in the transition from the biblical judges to the United Kingdom of Israel under Saul, and again in the monarchy's transition from Saul to David.
