Samuel Brown Wylie Mitchell
Samuel Brown Wylie Mitchell (August 16, 1828 – August 16, 1879) is the initial founder of '' Phi Kappa Sigma International Fraternity'', the first fraternity at the University of Pennsylvania. Mitchell was also a doctor and physician in the Union Army, distinguished member of the Masons and an active social member of Philadelphia. He was a co-founder, on April 15, 1865, of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, or MOLLUS, the first post-Civil War veteran's organization. He bore Companion #00001. The organization, which welcomed those who had served in the suppression of the Rebellion, and were at some point in their careers commissioned officers in the military service of the United States, exists today. It is composed primarily of their descendants. Phi Kappa Sigma International Fraternity
Phi Kappa Sigma () is an international all-male college secret society and social fraternity. While nicknames differ from institution to institution, the most common nicknames for the fraternity are Skulls, Skullhouse, Phi Kap, and PKS (the first two because of the skull and crossbones on the fraternity's badge and coat of arms). Phi Kappa Sigma was founded by Dr. Samuel Brown Wylie Mitchell at the University of Pennsylvania. Mitchell recorded the initial ideas and concepts of Phi Kappa Sigma on August 16, 1850. He then began to discuss the idea with other students, first Charles Hare Hutchinson, and then Alfred Victor du Pont (son of Alfred V. du Pont), John Thorne Stone, Andrew Adams Ripka, James Bayard Hodge, and Duane Williams. The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS), or simply the Loyal Legion is a United States patriotic order, organized April 15, 1865, by three veteran officers of the Army. The original membership was composed of members of the Army, Navy, or Marine Corps of the United States, who had served during the American Civil War as commissioned officers in Federal service, or who had served and thereafter been commissioned, and who thereby "had aided in maintaining the honor, integrity, and supremacy of the national movement" during the Civil War.
