Samuel Merner
Samuel Merner (9 January 1823 – 11 August 1908) was a Canadian businessman and politician. Born in Kien, Canton of Bern, Switzerland, with the last name of Muerner or Mürner, he immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1837 settling in Waterloo County, Ontario. He later anglicized his last name to Merner. A businessman, his career in politics started in 1857 when he became a member of the council of the village of New Hamburg, Ontario. From 1873 to 1878, he was reeve of New Hamburg and served as Warden of Waterloo County in 1878. After losing a by-election in 1878 in the Ontario provincial riding of Waterloo South, he was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the federal riding of Waterloo South in the 1878 federal election. Waterloo South
Waterloo South was a federal electoral district and a provincial electoral district in Canada. Federally, it was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1968. It was located in the province of Ontario. It was created by the British North America Act of 1867 using an 1859 definition of the "South Riding of Waterloo", which consisted of the Town of Galt and the Villages of Preston, New Hamburg, and Hespeler, as well as the Townships of South Waterloo, North Dumfries and Wilmot. In 1903, it was redefined to consist of the townships of North Dumfries, South Waterloo and Wilmot, and the towns of Ayr, Galt, Hespeler, New Hamburg and Preston. Beginning in 1924, the riding was called "Waterloo South". The electoral district was abolished in 1966 when it was redistributed between Kitchener, Perth and Waterloo ridings. 1878 Canadian Federal Election
The 1878 Canadian federal election was held on September 17, 1878 to elect members of the House of Commons of the 4th Parliament of Canada. It resulted in the end of Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie's Liberal government after only one term in office. Canada suffered an economic depression during Mackenzie's term, and his party was punished by voters for it. The Liberals' policy of free trade also hurt their support with the business establishment in Toronto and Montreal. Sir John A. Senatorial Division
Canadian Senate divisions refers to two aspects of the Senate of Canada. First, it refers to the division of Canada into four regional Senate divisions of 24 senators each, as set out in section 22 of the Constitution Act, 1867.The Constitution Act, 1867', 30 & 31 Vict., c. 3, s. 22 (U.K.). The four regions are the Western Provinces, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. These regions are intended to serve the Senate's purpose of providing regional representation in the Parliament of Canada, in contrast to the popular representation that the House of Commons is intended to provide.
