Samuel Guthrie (politician)
Samuel "Sam" Guthrie (1885 – January 25, 1960) was a Scotland, Scottish-born miner, farmer and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Newcastle (electoral district), Newcastle from 1920 to 1924 as a Labour candidates and parties in Canada, Federated Labour member and Cowichan-Newcastle from 1937 to 1949 as a British Columbia New Democratic Party, Co-operative Commonwealth Federation member in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. He was born in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire and worked as a boy in the Scottish coal mines. Guthrie came to Canada in 1911 and settled on Vancouver Island south of Nanaimo, British Columbia, Nanaimo. He was once again employed in the coal mines. He was jailed for two years following a long strike. After his release, Guthrie began farming. Labour Candidates And Parties In Canada
There have been various groups in Canada that have nominated candidates under the label Labour Party or Independent Labour Party, or other variations from the 1870s until the 1960s. These were usually local or provincial groups using the Labour Party or Independent Labour Party name, backed by local labour councils made up of many union locals in a particular city, or individual trade unions. There was an attempt to create a national Canadian Labour Party in the late 1910s and in the 1920s, but these were only partly successful. The Communist Party of Canada (CPC), formed in 1921, fulfilled some of labour's political yearnings from coast to coast, and then the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) – Worker Farmer Socialist was formed in 1932. East Kilbride (; ), sometimes referred to as EK, is the largest town in South Lanarkshire in Scotland, and the country's sixth-largest locality by population. Nanaimo ( ) is a city of about 100,000 on the east coast of Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada.
