Samuel Griffith Society
The Samuel Griffith Society is an Australian conservative legal organisation founded in 1992 by a group led by former Chief Justice of Australia Sir Harry Gibbs, former Senator John Stone, businessman Hugh Morgan and legal academic Greg Craven. Named after Sir Samuel Griffith, one of the architects of the Australian Constitution, the society describes its aims as being: "to undertake and support research into ustralia'sconstitutional arrangements, to encourage and promote widespread debate about the benefits of federalism, and to defend the present Constitution." It holds annual conferences, runs an annual national constitutional law essay competition and publishes an annual journal of conference proceedings entitled "Upholding the Australian Constitution". Ian Callinan
Ian David Francis Callinan (born 1 September 1937) is a former Justice of the High Court of Australia, the highest court in the Australian court hierarchy. Education Born in Casino, New South Wales, Callinan was raised in Brisbane, Queensland, and educated at Brisbane Grammar School. He received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Queensland while working as an articled clerk. On 23 July 2010, the University of Queensland awarded him a Doctorate of Laws (''honoris causa'') in recognition of his service to the law and the arts. Simon Steward (judge)
Simon Harry Peter Steward (born 9 January 1969) is an Australian judge and former barrister currently serving as a Justice of the High Court of Australia. He was previously a judge of the Federal Court of Australia from 2018 until his appointment to the High Court. Education Steward grew up in Melbourne, attending Sacred Heart School in Kew before going on to Xavier College. He graduated from the Melbourne Law School in 1991 with first-class honours. Mark William Latham (; born 28 February 1961) is an Australian politician and media commentator who is a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council. Pauline Hanson's One Nation (PHON), also known as One Nation (ON) or One Nation Party (ONP), is a Right-wing populism, right-wing populist List of political parties in Australia, political party in Australia. ''Love v Commonwealth; Thoms v Commonwealth'' is a decision of the High Court of Australia. It is an important case in Australian constitutional law, deciding that Aboriginal Australians are not " aliens" for the purposes of section 51(xix) of the Constitution. The case was decided on 11 February 2020. Background Daniel Love and Brendan Thoms were men who had failed their migration character tests as a result of serving jail sentences. James Allan (born 1960) is a Canadian-Australian law professor and writer. He is the Garrick Professor of Law at the University of Queensland. Allan has degrees from Queen's University, the London School of Economics and the University of Hong Kong. He qualified as a barrister and solicitor with The Law Society of Ontario in 1988. Susan Mary Kiefel (; born 1954) is an Australian lawyer and barrister who was the 13th Chief Justice of Australia from 2017 to 2023. Ray Evans (10 September 1939 – 17 June 2014) was an Australian businessperson, political conservative, and campaigner against climate change mitigation efforts. Early years and education Ray Evans was educated at Melbourne High School. He attended the University of Melbourne, from which he graduated in electrical and mechanical engineering. During university, he was president of the Melbourne University ALP Club, and a delegate from the Federated Fodder and Fuel Trades Union to Victorian ALP state conferences.
