Samuel Collins (theologian)
Samuel Collins (1576–1651) was an English clergyman and academic, Regius Professor of Divinity at Cambridge and Provost of King's College, Cambridge. Life He was son of Baldwin Collins, fellow and vice-provost of Eton College. He was born at Eton on 5 August 1576, and studied for nine years in Eton School. In 1591 he was elected to a scholarship at King's College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. 1595–6, M.A. 1599, B.D. 1606. He became chaplain to Archbishop Richard Bancroft and to his successor, Archbishop George Abbot. Collins obtained the rectory of Fen Ditton in Cambridgeshire, and held also the sinecure rectory of Milton in the same county. He was created D.D. at the Cambridge commencement, 3 March 1613, when he was selected by John Richardson (translator), the Regius Professor of Divinity, to answer upon three questions in a divinity act held in St. Mary's Church before Charles, Prince of Wales, and Frederick V, Elector Palatine. Samuel Collins (physicist)
Samuel Cornette Collins (September 28, 1898 in Kentucky – June 19, 1984 in Washington, DC.) was an American chemist, physicist, and engineer. Collins graduated from Sumner County High School in 1916. He obtained his PhD in chemistry from the University of North Carolina in 1927. He taught at Carson-Newman College, the University of Tennessee, Tennessee State Teachers College, and the University of North Carolina, and joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a research associate in the chemistry department in 1930. After World War II, he returned to MIT, joining the department of mechanical engineering. He was appointed professor in 1949 and retired in 1964. He was named professor emeritus, serving in this post until 1983. Collins developed the first mass-produced helium liquefier, Collins Helium Cryostat, acquiring the title "Father of Practical Helium Liquefiers." Sam Collins (born 15 June 1994) is a professional Australian rules footballer who plays for the in the Australian Football League (AFL). Early life Originally from Donvale, Collins is the youngest of four children and attended Whitefriars College, graduating in 2012. As a junior, Collins played for the Donvale Football Club. He played for the Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC Cup Under 18s competition before moving onto the Box Hill Hawks Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Collins was a member of the Box Hill Hawks leadership team from age 19. He was recruited as a mature age player to Fremantle with their third selection, 55th overall, in the 2015 AFL draft. Samuel Christopher Collins (born 1 June 1989) is an English former professional footballer who played as a winger for Milton Keynes Dons, Kettering Town, Hendon, Wivenhoe Town, Maidenhead United, AFC Hornchurch, Concord Rangers, East Thurrock United, and Cheshunt. Playing career Collins began his career at Milton Keynes Dons, and made his first-team debut on 1 November 2006, coming on as an 18th-minute substitute for Sean O'Hanlon in a 4–1 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion in the League Trophy. Sam E. Collins (born 5 September 1982) is an Irish chess player. He was awarded the title International Master by FIDE in 2004. Junior career Born in Dublin, Collins' career began while a student in Gonzaga College, a school with a strong chess tradition. During his time at Gonzaga, he led the school to its second Millfield International chess tournament, which was considered the de facto Britain and Ireland schools' championships. Collins was named outstanding player of the tournament, an award previously won by such masters as Mark Quinn, Brian Kelly, Mark Ferguson and Michael Adams. Sam Jason Collins (born 5 June 1977) is an English professional football manager and former player who is now Lead Youth Development Youth Coach at Mansfield Town. He played as a centre back in the Football League for Huddersfield Town, Bury, Port Vale, Hull City, Swindon Town and Hartlepool United, and managed in the Football League with Hartlepool United. Collins started his career with Huddersfield Town in 1994 before he transferred to Bury in 1999. After three years he moved on to Port Vale, where he established himself as captain. Samuel Wilson Collins (September 17, 1923 – March 22, 2012) was an American lawyer, jurist and politician from Maine. A Republican, Collins was first elected to the Maine Senate in 1974. He was served for 10 years until 1984, when he did not seek re-election. Collins served for 6 years (1988 to 1994) as an associate justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. He also served on his local school board from 1952 to 1960. Collins chose to return in Maine following law school graduation and took a position with Alan Bird's law firm in Rockland, where he was later named a managing partner. The law firm was later renamed Collins, Crandall, Hanscom and Pease. A Republican, Collins served in the state senate with his brother, Donald Collins of Caribou. Sam Collins (possibly August 11, 1887possibly October 20, 1949), sometimes known as Crying Sam Collins, was an early American blues singer and guitarist. His style has been described as "South Mississippi", rather than Delta blues and "The Jail House Blues" is his best-known recording. Biography Collins was born in Louisiana and grew up in McComb, Mississippi, just across the state line. By 1924, he was performing in local barrelhouses, often with King Solomon Hill; both of them sang falsetto parts and played slide guitar. Collins's first recording in 1927 was "Yellow Dog Blues", made for Gennett Records and recorded in Richmond, Indiana. Sam Collins (born Samuel Thomas Collins Vagg; 22 March 1825 – 25 May 1865) was an English music hall comedian, singer and theatre proprietor. He was born in Marylebone, London, and started work as a chimney sweep. He began touring the music halls in London in the 1840s, in the guise of an Irish traveller, characteristically "wearing a brimless top hat, a dress coat, knee breeches, worsted stockings, and brogues... his clothes tied up in a bundle and a shillelagh on his shoulder." His songs, such as "Paddy's Wedding", "Limerick Races", and " The Rocky Road to Dublin", earned him the nickname "The Singing Irishman", and "he is still regarded as the prototype stage Irish comic".
