Sampson H. Butler
Sampson Hale Butler (January 3, 1803 – March 16, 1848) was a U.S. Representative from South Carolina. Born near Ninety Six, Edgefield District, South Carolina, Butler attended the country schools and South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina) at Columbia. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1825 and commenced practice in Edgefield, South Carolina. He moved to Barnwell, South Carolina, and continued the practice of law. Sheriff of Barnwell County 1832–1839, he then served as member of the State house of representatives from 1832 to 1835. Butler was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses and served from March 4, 1839, until September 27, 1842, when he resigned. He resumed the practice of law. Ninety Six is a town in Greenwood County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,998 at the 2010 census. Geography Ninety Six is located in eastern Greenwood County at (34.173211, -82.021710). South Carolina Highway 34 passes through the town as its Main Street; it leads west to Greenwood, the county seat, and east to Newberry. Lake Greenwood State Park is northeast of town, and Ninety Six National Historic Site is south of the center of town. Barnwell is a city in and county seat of Barnwell County, South Carolina, United States, located along U.S. Route 278. The population was 4,750 at the 2010 census. Geography Barnwell is located east of the center of Barnwell County at (33.244534, -81.363214). Turkey Creek, a tributary of the Salkehatchie River, runs through the city just west of the downtown, and includes a small impoundment known as Lake Brown in the north part of the city. U.S. Route 278 passes through the city, leading south to Allendale and northwest to Augusta, Georgia. State highways 3, 70, 64 also pass through the city; SC 64 leads west to the east entrance of the Savannah River Site, which is a nuclear reservation. Edgefield is part of the Augusta, Georgia metropolitan area. Geography Edgefield is located slightly east of the center of Edgefield County at (33.7868, -81.9278). Edgefield County is a county located on the western border of the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, its population was 25,657. Its county seat and largest municipality is Edgefield. The county was established on March 12, 1785.
