Samo, Calabria
Samo (; ) is a small town and ''comune'' located in the Province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy. Samo has a population of 1,090, but this increases seasonally. Samo is about inland and about above sea level. It is located at the foot of Aspromonte National Park. Samo has a number of fresh water springs running in the nearby mountains and through the town which are used by most of the population for drinking. History Samo has been historically a city of much trade and import. From the 16th century onwards, people would trade sheepskins, lambs and pineapple. Main sights The main attractions of Samo are the ruins of the old town destroyed in the 1908 Messina earthquake and hiking in the nearby Aspromonte National Park. Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria () is an area of local government at the level of metropolitan city in the Calabria region of Italy. 1908 Messina Earthquake
A devastating earthquake occurred on 28 December 1908 in Sicily and Calabria, southern Italy with a moment magnitude of 7.1 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI (''Extreme''). The epicentre was in the Strait of Messina which separates Sicily from the Italian mainland. The cities of Messina and Reggio Calabria were almost completely destroyed and between 75,000 and 82,000 people died, making it the deadliest earthquake in the history of Europe. Aspromonte
The Aspromonte is a mountain massif in the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria (Calabria, southern Italy). In Italian aspro means "rough" whereas in Greek it means "white" (wikt:άσπρος, Άσπρος), therefore the name literally translates to either "rough mountain" or "white mountain". It overlooks the Strait of Messina, being limited by the ionian Sea, Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas and by the Pietrace river. The highest peak is Montalto (Aspromonte), Montalto (). The constituting rocks are mostly gneiss, and mica schists, which form characteristic overlapping terraces. The massif is part of the Aspromonte National Park.
