Samantha Graham-Maré
Samantha Graham-Maré (born 27 May 1969) is a South African politician from the Eastern Cape who was elected to the National Assembly of South Africa in the 2019 general election and re-elected in the 2024 general election as a member of the Democratic Alliance. Graham-Maré has been the Deputy Minister of Electricity since 2024. Graham-Maré served as the shadow deputy minister of public works and infrastructure from 2019 to 2020 and as the shadow minister for the portfolio between 2020 and 2023, when she was named shadow minister of electricity. She is a former councillor of the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality. Early life and education Samantha Graham-Maré was born on 27 May 1969. She matriculated from Rhenish Girls' High School in Stellenbosch in 1986. In December 2021, Graham-Maré graduated ''cum laude'' from the University of South Africa with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB). The African National Congress (ANC) is a political party in South Africa. 2011 South African Municipal Elections
Municipal elections were held in South Africa on 18 May 2011, electing new councils for all municipalities in the country. Municipal elections are held every five years, and the previous municipal elections were held in 2006. The first municipal elections following the reorganisation of municipalities took place in December 2000. Half of the seats (rounded up for odd numbers) in each municipality are elected on the first past the post system in single member wards. The other half of the seats are allocated to restore proportionality as follows: The total number of seats are allocated using the largest remainder method by using a modified Hare quota. Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality
Dr Beyers Naudé Municipality (; ) is a local municipality within the Sarah Baartman District Municipality, in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The municipality was established by merging the Camdeboo, Ikwezi and Baviaans local municipalities. The decision to merge the municipalities was taken by the Municipal Demarcation Board in 2015 but only took effect after municipal elections on 3 August 2016. The new municipality is named after the Afrikaner cleric and anti-apartheid activist Beyers Naudé. Its seat is in Graaff-Reinet. The merger was motivated by political interests because the ruling party, the African National Congress, was losing support in the area. One of the municipalities, Baviaans, was already governed by the opposition Democratic Alliance. National Assembly Of South Africa
The National Assembly is the directly elected house of the Parliament of South Africa, located in Cape Town, Western Cape. It consists of four hundred members who are elected every five years using a party-list proportional representation system where half of the members are elected proportionally from nine provincial lists and the remaining half from national lists so as to restore proportionality. The National Assembly is presided over by a Speaker, assisted by a Deputy Speaker. The current speaker as of 14 June 2024 is Thoko Didiza ( ANC). Eastern Cape
The Eastern Cape ( ; ) is one of the nine provinces of South Africa. Its capital is Bhisho, and its largest city is Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). Due to its climate and nineteenth-century towns, it is a common location for tourists. It is also known for having been home to many anti-apartheid activists, including Nelson Mandela.
