Samantabhadra (Bodhisattva)
Samantabhadra () is a great bodhisattva in Buddhism associated with practice and meditation. Together with Shakyamuni Buddha and the bodhisattva Mañjuśrī, he forms the Shakyamuni Triad in Mahayana Buddhism. He is the patron of the '' Lotus Sutra'' and, according to the '' Avatamsaka Sutra'', made the ten great vows which are the basis of a bodhisattva. In Chinese Buddhism, Samantabhadra is known as Puxian and is associated with action, whereas Mañjuśrī is associated with '' prajñā'' (transcendent wisdom). In Japan, this bodhisattva is known as Fugen, and is often venerated in Tendai and Shingon Buddhism. In the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, Samantabhadra is also the name of the Adi-Buddha, often portrayed in indivisible union ('' yab-yum'') with his consort, Samantabhadrī. Adi-Buddha
The Ādi-Buddha (, Ch: 本佛, Jp: honbutsu, First Buddha, Original Buddha, or Primordial Buddha) is a Mahayana Buddhist concept referring to the most fundamental, supreme, or ancient Buddha in the cosmos. Another common term for this figure is Dharmakāya Buddha. The term emerges in Tantras (Buddhism), tantric Buddhist literature, most prominently in the Kalachakra. "Ādi" means "first", such that the Ādibuddha was the first to attain Buddhahood. "Ādi" can also mean "primordial", not referring to a person but to an innate wisdom that is present in all sentient beings. In East Asian Buddhism, the term 本佛 (běn fó, original Buddha, root Buddha) also appears in the works of Tiantai and Tendai school, referring to the original Buddha of the ''Lotus Sutra'' which was also later identified with the cosmic Buddha Vairocana, Mahavairocana. Samantabhadra (Jain Monk)
Samantabhadra was a Jain ācārya (head of the monastic order) who lived about the later part of the second century CE. He was a proponent of the Jaina doctrine of Anekāntavāda. The ''Ratnakaranda śrāvakācāra'' is the most popular work of Samantabhadra. Samantabhadra lived after Umaswami but before Pujyapada. Life Samantabhadra is said to have lived from 150 CE to 250 CE. He was from southern India during the time of Cholas. He was a poet, logician, eulogist and an accomplished linguist. He is credited with spreading Jainism in southern India. Samantabhadra, in his early stage of asceticism, was attacked with a disease known as ''bhasmaka'' (the condition of insatiable hunger). As, digambara monks don't eat more than once in a day, he endured great pain. Ultimately, he sought the permission of his preceptor to undertake the vow of Sallekhana. Samantabhadra Meditation Sutra
The ''Samantabhadra Meditation Sūtra'' (; Japanese: 観普賢菩薩行法経; rōmaji ''Kan Fugen Bosatsu Gyōhō Kyō''; Vietnamese: Kinh Quán Phổ Hiền Bồ Tát Hạnh Pháp; Korean: 관보현보살행법경; ''Gwan Bohyeon Bosal Haengbeop Gyeong''), also known as the ''Sūtra of Meditation on the Bodhisattva Universal Virtue'', is a Mahayana Buddhist sutra teaching meditation and repentance practices. The extant Chinese text of the meditation sutra was translated by Dharmamitra between 424 and 442 CE (T09n277). The ''Samantabhadra Meditation Sūtra'' is often included in the so-called " Threefold Lotus Sutra," along with the ''Lotus Sutra'' and the '' Innumerable Meanings Sutra''. Samantabhadri (tutelary)
Samantabhadri (Sanskrit; Devanagari: समन्तभद्री ; IAST: samantabhadrī, ) is a dakini and female Buddha from the Vajrayana Buddhist tradition. She is the consort and female counterpart of Samantabhadra, known amongst some Tibetan Buddhists as the Primordial Buddha. Samantabhadri herself is known as the primordial Mother Buddha. Samantabhadri is the dharmakaya dakini aspect of the Trikaya, or three bodies of a Buddha. As such, Samantabhadri represents the aspect of Buddhahood in whom delusion and conceptual thought have never arisen. As font or wellspring of the aspects of the divine feminine she may be understood as the Great Mother or as an aspect of Prajnaparamita. Samantabhadri is a figure found primarily in the Nyingma or Old Translation school of Tibetan Buddhism.
