Sam Rayburn Independent School District is a public school district based in the community of Ivanhoe, Texas (USA). In addition to Ivanhoe, the district also serves the communities of Telephone and Elwood in north central Fannin County. The district was formed in 1964 by the consolidation of the North Fannin and Telephone districts, and was named after Sam Rayburn (the long-time Speaker of the United States House of Representatives who was from Fannin County). Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Steele donated the land on which the school sits. The bell from the original North Fannin school was preserved and sits on the school campus. Telephone is an unincorporated community in Fannin County, Texas, United States. According to the ''Handbook of Texas'', the community had an estimated population of 210 in 2010. Geography Telephone is situated at the junction of Farm Roads 273 and 2029 in northeastern Fannin County, approximately 17 miles northeast of Bonham and 32 miles northeast of Sherman. History Although the first settlers arrived in the area during the 1870s, a community did not develop until the mid-1880s. The community received its name because the only telephone in the area was located in a general store owned by Pete Hindman. When Hindman applied for permission to open a post office, authorities repeatedly refused his submissions because the suggested names were already used by other post offices in the state. Fannin County is a county in the far northeast of the U.S. state of Texas, on the border with Oklahoma. As of the 2020 census, its population was 35,662, making it the 87th-most populous county in Texas. Samuel Taliaferro Rayburn (January 6, 1882 – November 16, 1961) was an American politician who served as the 43rd speaker of the United States House of Representatives. He was a three-time House speaker, former House majority leader, two-time House minority leader, and a 24-term congressman, representing Texas's 4th congressional district as a Democrat from 1913 to 1961. He holds the record for the longest tenure as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, serving for over 17 years (among his three separate tenures).
