Sam Norkin
Samuel Norkin (January 10, 1917 – July 30, 2011) was a Brooklyn, New York-born cartoonist who specialized in theater caricatures for more than seven decades. His drawings of theater, opera, ballet and film celebrities appeared in ''Variety'', ''Backstage'', ''The Philadelphia Inquirer'', ''The Washington Post'', ''Los Angeles Times'', ''The Boston Globe'' and many other publications. Norkin learned composition and anatomy from the muralist Mordi Gassner. He received a scholarship to the Metropolitan Art School after his high school graduation, and he later attended Cooper Union, the Brooklyn Museum Art School and the School of Fine and Industrial Art. During the 1940s, newspaper editors wanted to devote more space to new theatrical productions, but photo opportunities usually did not happen until a show opened. Kin Platt
Kin Platt (December 8, 1911 – November 30, 2003) was an American writer, artist, painter, sculptor, caricaturist, and comics artist, best known for penning radio comedy and animated TV series, as well as children's literature, children's Mystery fiction, mystery novels, one of which earned him the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Award. He additionally wrote and drew comic books (creating an early talking animals in fiction, talking animal superhero, Supermouse) and comic strips. Al Hirschfeld
Albert Hirschfeld (June 21, 1903 – January 20, 2003) was an American caricaturist best known for his black and white portraits of celebrities and Broadway stars. Early life and career Al Hirschfeld was born in 1903 in a two-story duplex apartment at 1313 Carr Street in St. Louis, Missouri. His father, Isaac, was a German Jewish traveling salesman, while his mother Rebecca was from a family of strict, Russian Orthodox Jews; his maternal grandparents refused to eat in his parents' non-kosher home. Hirschfeld described how the family would not permit bread in the house during Passover, and during this time the family would eat matzah and ham sandwiches. He moved with his family to New York City in 1915, where he received art training at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. The National Cartoonists Society (NCS) is an organization of professional cartoonists in the United States. It presents the National Cartoonists Society Awards. The Society was born in 1946 when groups of cartoonists got together to entertain the troops. They enjoyed each other's company and decided to meet on a regular basis. NCS members work in many branches of the profession, including advertising, animation, newspaper comic strips and syndicated single-panel cartoons, comic books, editorial cartoons, gag cartoons, graphic novels, greeting cards, magazine and book illustration. Only recently has the National Cartoonists Society embraced web comics.
