Samuel Alexander
Samuel Alexander (6 January 1859 – 13 September 1938) was an Australian-born British philosopher. He was the first Jewish fellow of an Oxbridge college. Early life Alexander was born at 436 George Street, in what is now the commercial heart of Sydney, Australia. He was the third son of Samuel Alexander, a prosperous saddler, and Eliza née Sloman. Both parents were Jewish. His father died just before he was born, and Eliza moved to the adjacent colony of Victoria in 1863 or 1864. They went to live at St Kilda, and Alexander was placed at a private school kept by a Mr Atkinson. In 1871, he was sent to Wesley College, Melbourne, then under the headmastership of Martin Howy Irving, and was always grateful for the efficiency and comprehensiveness of his schooling. He matriculated at the University of Melbourne on 22 March 1875 to do arts. Samuel "Sami" David Alexander (13 July 1862 – 8 March 1943) was a Croatian Jewish industrialist, doyen of Croatian industrialists, a philanthropist and a member of the Zagreb prominent Alexander family. Background and family Alexander, known as ''Der Gescheite'' (The Smart One), was born in Zagreb to a Jewish family. His father, Jonas Alexander, was a merchant who came to Zagreb from Güssing, Austria and his mother Roza (née Stern) was from an old influential Jewish family from Zagreb. Alexander's father was councillor at the "Croatian commercial artisan chamber". Alexander had a younger brother, Šandor, and two sisters, Gizela and Ilka. He attended elementary and high school in Zagreb, and a business academy in Vienna. Around 1860 his father opened a grain store in Zagreb. Samuel Davies Alexander (May 3, 1819 – ) was a Presbyterian minister. Samuel Davies Alexander was born on May 3, 1819, in Princeton, New Jersey, son of Archibald Alexander, clergyman. He was graduated from Princeton College in the class of 1838, and then entered the Princeton Theological Seminary, being ordained to the Presbyterian ministry in 1847. The following year he took pastoral charge of the Port Richmond Presbyterian church in Philadelphia, Pa., remaining there two years, and removing at the end of that time to Freehold, N. J., where he preached five years. In 1855 he accepted a call to the Phillips Presbyterian church in New York City, and successfully discharged the duties of his position until 1893. Samuel Thomas Alexander (October 29, 1836 – September 10, 1904) co-founded a major agricultural and transportation business in the Kingdom of Hawaii. Early life In November 1831, the Reverend William Patterson Alexander (1805–1884) and Mary Ann McKinney Alexander (1810–1888) arrived in April 1832 as missionaries to the Hawaiian Islands. Samuel Thomas was born October 29, 1836 at the Waioli mission in what is now Hanalei on the northern coast of Kauai island. In 1843 the family moved to the Lahainaluna School, where they became friends with the family of Dwight Baldwin who had arrived in the previous company in 1831. Samuel Kern Alexander Jr. is Professor of Excellence at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he is endowed by the O'Leary Endowment and Editor of the ''Journal of Education Finance'', published by the University of Illinois Press and Project MUSE of Johns Hopkins University.
