Saltvik April 2012
Saltvik is a municipalities of Finland, municipality of Åland, an autonomous territory of Finland. The total area is 1 161,8 km2, of which 150,7 km2 is land, 4,7 km2 lakes and 1006,4 km2 sea. The archipelago north of Saltvik is perhaps the most beautiful one in Åland. Closest to land are the big islands Boxö, Sommarö, Flatö and Ryssö. Beyond, the horizon opens up and after passing Saggö it is more or less unbroken. History The municipality has a rich history. When Åland emerged from the sea about 8,000 BC, Saltvik was the first land to be seen. During the Viking ages, Kvarnbo used to be a central crown court- and place of merchandise. Today, people can visit the medieval church and at the court place see the memorial monument. The church St:a Maria is located by Kvarnboviken in the east of Saltvik. KiMs is a Danish brand of chips and snacks, owned by the Orkla Group. The brand "KiM" was trademarked in 1960 by Odense Marcipanfabrik (a marzipan factory) in Denmark, but as a German cigarette brand of this name already existed, the name was changed to "KiMs" in 1965. Atos Wirtanen
Atos Kasimir Wirtanen (27 January 1906 in Saltvik – 10 March 1979) was a Finnish left-wing intellectual, journalist, member of Finnish parliament (1936–1953) and cultural critic. He was born in Saltvik, Åland. Wirtanen entered parliament on the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) list at the 1936 election. An opponent of fascism, in 1938 in response to the events of Kristallnacht, he likened Nazism's antisemitism with the Finnish far-right's hatred of Swedish-speaking Finns. During the Continuation War, he was among the signatories of the "Petition of the Thirty-Three", members of the peace opposition who sought peace with the Soviet Union, his actions forcing him to spend a period underground. Following the war, he joined to the Finnish People's Democratic League (SKDL) in 1946. Wirtanen was also active in the Socialist Unity Party (SYP) and served as its chairman from 1948 to 1955. Pehr Henrik Nordgren
Pehr Henrik Nordgren (19 January 1944 – 25 August 2008) was a Finnish composer. Life Pehr Henrik Nordgren was born in Saltvik, Åland. received composition lessons starting from 1958 in Helsinki and studied musicology at the university from 1962 to 1967, as well as receiving private tuition from Joonas Kokkonen from 1965 to 1969. At the Tokyo University of the Arts, he supplemented his composition studies from 1970 to 1973 with Yoshio Hasegawa and became acquainted with traditional Japanese music, which soon became an influence in his works. In 1973, he married Shinobu Suzuki in Tokyo, and returned to Finland where he established himself in Kaustinen, a small place in Ostrobothnia, as a freelance composer.
