Salo Grenning
Salo Grenning, pen name Pedro (5 April 1918 – 1 February 1986) was a Norwegian illustrator. He was born as Salo Goldfarb in Bergen as a son of businessman Leopold Goldfarb (from Rajgród, lived 1878–1933) and Sonja Epstein (from Suwałki, lived 1888–1970). His first newspaper drawing was published in 1933 in ''Bergens Arbeiderblad''. He studied at the Belfast School of Art from 1935 to 1936, at the Bergen National Academy of the Arts from 1936 to 1937 and at Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry from 1937 to 1938. He adopted the pen name Pedro in February 1941, one year after Nazi Germany invaded and occupied Norway. He fled to the United Kingdom in 1941, via Shetland (together with Leif Andreas Larsen) to Scotland. In 1944, as a soldier in the British Army, he participated in the liberation of Walcheren and Middelburg, later becoming an honorary citizen of the latter. The history of Jews in Norway dates back to the 1400s. Although there were very likely Jewish merchants, sailors and others who entered Norway during the Middle Ages, no efforts were made to establish a Jewish community. Through the early modern period, Norway, still devastated by the Black Death, was ruled by Denmark from 1536 to 1814 and then by Sweden until 1905. In 1687, Christian V rescinded all Jewish privileges, specifically banning Jews from Norway, except with a special dispensation. Jews found in the kingdom were jailed and expelled, and this ban persisted until 1851. In 1814, when Norway gained independence from Denmark, the general ban against Jews entering the country was "continued" in the new Norwegian Constitution. Stavern
Stavern is a small water-side town in Larvik municipality in Vestfold County, Norway. It is south of the city of Larvik. Currently there are around 3,000 inhabitants in Stavern. It is a small town where tourism is one of the most important sources of income. During summer, the population increases to around 30,000-40,000 people, due to camping sites and cottages around the town centre as well as boats visiting the harbour. Stavern experiences 200 days of sunshine per year. Consequentially, Stavern's population more than doubles during summers. From the mid 1750s until 1864, Stavern was home to the nation's main naval base located in a shipyard in Fredriksvern.
