Salmon Fletcher Dutton
Salmon Fletcher Dutton (July 7, 1870 – December 2, 1931) was an American businessman, Lieutenant colonel (United States), Lieutenant colonel in World War I. He is known for constructing the Dutton House, one of the earliest residences on Carmel Point, California. During the 1920s, he was a founding member of the Abalone League. Early life Dutton was born on July 5, 1870, in Cavendish, Vermont. His father was postmaster Richard Henry Dutton (1833-1891), and his mother was Helen Louise Wood (1850-). He was raised in New England. The settlement Cavendish, Vermont, Duttonsville, was named after his gg grandfather Salmon Dutton (1744-1824) in the early 1780s. Cavendish, Vermont
Cavendish is a town in Windsor County, Vermont, United States. The town was likely named after William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire. The population was 1,392 at the 2020 census. The town of Cavendish includes the unincorporated villages of Cavendish and Proctorsville. History Early settlers Captain John Coffeen, the town's first permanent settler, brought his family and possessions into the wilderness of Cavendish in June 1769. They built a dwelling in the northern part of town on what is now E. I. Heald's farm, on the lot still called the "Coffeen pasture". The Coffeens remained the only family in Cavendish for two years.
