Salgótarján ( hu, Salgótarjáni járás) is a district in north-eastern part of Nógrád County. ''Salgótarján'' is also the name of the town where the district seat is found. The district is located in the Northern Hungary, Northern Hungary Statistical Region. Geography Salgótarján District borders with the Slovakian region of Banská Bystrica Region, Banská Bystrica to the north, Ózd District ''(Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County)'' and Bátonyterenye District to the southeast, Pásztó District to the south, Szécsény District to the west. The number of the inhabited places in Salgótarján District is 29. Municipalities The district has 1 Town with county rights, urban county and 28 villages. Districts of Hungary are the second-level divisions of Hungary after counties. They replaced the 175 subregions of Hungary in 2013. Altogether, there are 174 districts in the 19 counties, and there are 23 districts in Budapest. Mátraszele
Mátraszele is a village in Nógrád County, Hungary, the Zagyva river flows through the settlement. As of 2022 census, it has a population of 904 (see Demographics). The village located 8.5 km from (Nr. 81) Hatvan–Fiľakovo railway line, 12.0 km far from Salgótarján, 10.4 km from the main road 21 and 52.8 km from the M3 motorway. History The name of Mátraszele was mentioned for the first time between 1304-1321 in a deed as the property of the Rátót clan under the names ''Fel-Szele'' and ''Al-Szele''. It became the property of the in 1449. Pál Jánossy and Lestár Feleki owned it on 1548. The fate of the settlement in the 17th century is unknown. Márkháza
Márkháza is a village in Nógrád County, Hungary. It is located 15 kilometers from Salgótarján in the Kis Zagyva Valley. The village is believed to have been named after Mark, the son of one of the owners of Fehérkő Castle. It was first mentioned in writing in 1548, when it was destroyed by Turkish troops. Afterwards, it was known as Tótmarokháza, indicating a Slovak presence and influence in the village. Kisbárkány
Kisbárkány is a village in Nógrád County, Hungary with 161 inhabitants (2014). The village is located in a narrow valley between the wooded hills of the Cserhát Cserhát () is a mountain range in Hungary, part of the North Hungarian Mountains, divided between Pest and Nógrád counties.
