Saldus Municipality (2009–2021)
The former Saldus Municipality () was a municipality in Courland, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2009 by merging parts of the former Saldus district: Saldus town (municipal centre), Ezere Parish, Jaunauce Parish, Jaunlutriņi Parish, Kursīši Parish, Lutriņi Parish, Nīgrande Parish, Novadnieki Parish, Pampāļi Parish, Ruba Parish, Saldus Parish, Šķēde Parish, Vadakste Parish, Zaņa Parish, Zirņi Parish and Zvārde Parish. On 1 July 2021 the municipality was merged with Brocēni Municipality into the new Saldus Municipality. The population in 2020 was 21,587. Population Patron of the University of Latvia Since 2013, Saldus Municipality was a Silver Patron of the University of Latvia Foundation. The scholarship “Medusmaize” was intended for young people of their region who, after graduating from high school, start basic studies in one of the Latvian universities. Administrative Divisions Of Latvia
The current administrative division of Latvia came into force on 1 July 2021. On 10 June 2020, the Saeima approved a municipal reform that would reduce the 110 municipalities and nine republic cities to 43 local government units consisting of 36 municipalities (, ''novads'') and seven state cities (''valstspilsētas, valstspilsēta''). The municipalities are also further divided into 71 cities/towns (''pilsētas'', '' pilsēta'') and 512 parishes (''pagasti, pagasts''). On 1 June 2021, the Constitutional Court of Latvia ruled that the annexation of Varakļāni Municipality to Rēzekne Municipality was unconstitutional. In response, the Saeima decided to preserve the existence of Varakļāni Municipality as a 43rd local government unit until 2025. In June 2024 the Saeima decreed that Varakļāni Municipality will be merged into Madona Municipality immediately after the 2025 Latvian municipal elections, 2025 Latvian local elections. Saldus Municipality
Saldus Municipality () is a municipality in Courland, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2021 by merging the former Saldus Municipality and Brocēni Municipality. Its centre is the town of Saldus. It contains 19 parishes and 2 towns/cities - Saldus and Brocēni. The population in 2021 was 27,110. The municipality has an international partnership with Bakhmut urban hromada in Ukraine. It borders Lithuania. History The municipality, previously a part of Kuldīga county, was first created during the Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1949 as ''Saldus district''. The district was divided up during the administrative-territorial reform in 2009 into Brocēni Municipality and Saldus Municipality. In 2021 they were merged again into a current Saldus Municipality. Brocēni Municipality
Brocēni Municipality () was a municipality in Courland, Latvia. As of 2020, the population was 5,633. History The municipality was formed in 2001 by merging Blīdene parish, Remte parish and Brocēni town with its countryside territory, the administrative centre being Brocēni. In 2009 the municipality absorbed Gaiķi parish as well. In 2010 Ciecere parish was created from the countryside territory of Brocēni town. On 1 July 2021, the municipality was merged with Saldus Municipality. The name of the new municipality is Saldus Municipality. Geography The district is located to the east of the city Saldus. Limestone is mined at Lake Cieceres and at Brocēni. The railway line from Riga to Liepāja runs through the district in a west-east direction.
