Salazar is a surname meaning ''old farmhouse'' (from Basque ''Sarasaitzu'' ld which then evolved to "Sarasaz," and then to the modern, Castillian form "Salazar"). The name originates from the valley of the same name: Salazar Valley, in Navarra, Spain. The surname started appearing during the early Middle Ages. Its origins are also related to a certain noble family around the 10th century, the Salazars, that held a fief in the area. It later also spread to the rest of the Basque Country, being specially common in Biscay during the 15th century. António de Oliveira Salazar (28 April 1889 – 27 July 1970) was a Portuguese statesman, academic, and economist who served as Portugal's President of the Council of Ministers of Portugal, President of the Council of Ministers from 1932 to 1968. Having come to power under the ("National Dictatorship"), he reframed the regime as the corporatism, corporatist ("New State"), with himself as a dictator. The regime he created lasted until 1974, making it one of the longest-lived authoritarian regimes in modern Europe. Salazar de las Palmas () is a Colombian municipality and town located in the department of North of Santander. Etymology The municipality bears the name of Salazar in honor of the oidor , in addition to the fact that "Las Palmas" refers to the fact that when the town was established it was characterized by a large vegetation of palm trees. History In 1583, Captain Alonso Esteban Rangel founded Salazar de las Palmas. The Salazar Valley (, ) is a valley in the east of the Foral Community of Navarre in Spain. It lies within the Merindad of Zangoza-Sangüesa and within that, the Comarca of Roncal-Salazar. The Sierra de Abodi, part of the Western Pyrenees, forms the natural boundary in the north. There is a ski resort in Abodi. Etymology The first mention of the name was in documents of the Monastery of Leire, with the denomination of ''Sarasazo'' (924). Later ''Sarasazu'' (1055), ''Sarasaz'' (1111 and 1469), ''Sarasaitz'' (1205) especially in texts written in Latin. Zaraitzu seems to derivate from an older form: ''Sarasaitzu''. The Castilian official denomination began being used widely in the 17th century probably influenced by the ''Salazar'' surname, famous in the Nobility of the Iberian Peninsula. ''Trimeresurus salazar'', also known as Salazar's pit viper, is a species of venomous, green pit viper first discovered in 2019 in the lowlands of the western part of Arunachal Pradesh, India; the fifth new reptile species to be discovered in the region in 2019. It was named after Salazar Slytherin from the ''Harry Potter'' series. It has a dark green head and yellowish green dorsal scales on the rest of its body. The species is sexually dichromatic; the males have reddish-orange and yellow-orange stripes and a rusty red-orange tail that the females lack.
