Sal Iaquinto
Salvatore Robert Iaquinto (born March 1, 1968) is a Virginia Circuit Court Judge and former politician. From 2006–2013 he served in the Virginia House of Delegates, representing the 84th district in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Virginia Beach. He is a member of the Republican Party (United States), Republican Party. Iaquinto announced that he would not run for reelection in 2013. On May 31, 2013, he was given an interim appointment as a judge of the Virginia Beach Virginia General District Court, General District Court, effective July 1. Iaquinto said he would resign from the House, effective on the date of his swearing-in. Iaquinto was appointed to the Virginia Beach Circuit Court effective April 1, 2024. The Virginia House of Delegates is one of the two houses of the Virginia General Assembly, the other being the Senate of Virginia. It has 100 members elected for terms of two years; unlike most states, these elections take place during odd-numbered years. The Virginia General District Court (GDC) is the lowest level of the Virginia court system, and is the court that most Virginians have contact with. The jurisdiction of the GDC is generally limited to traffic cases and other misdemeanors, civil cases involving amounts of under $25,000. There are 32 GDC districts, each having at least one judge, and each having a clerk of the court and a courthouse with courtroom facilities. The GDCs are not courts of record, meaning that they do not keep detailed records of their proceedings and their decisions provide no precedent to be cited in other proceedings. Proceedings before the GDC are less formal than those brought before higher courts in the state. They do not conduct jury trials; cases are heard and decided by the judge. The Virginia Circuit Courts are the state trial courts of general jurisdiction in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Circuit Courts have jurisdiction to hear civil and criminal cases. For civil cases, the courts have authority to try cases with an amount in controversy of more than $4,500 and have exclusive original jurisdiction over claims for more than $25,000. In criminal matters, the Circuit Courts are the trial courts for all felony charges and for misdemeanors originally charged there. Robert Francis McDonnell (born June 15, 1954) is an American politician, attorney, businessman, academic administrator, and former military officer who served as the 71st governor of Virginia from 2010 to 2014.
